Running is a very easy sport to get into; all you need are some sneakers, shorts, t-shirt, and that’s it! The flexibility of running is also very attractive, as you can do it almost anywhere you wish.
Although it’s a simple sport, there are a few types of running, such as marathons, ultramarathons, sprints, and more Find out what guests Tony Riddle, Tim Don, Dean Karnazes, and Joe De Sena have to say about this sport.
You can basically split running into two groups: short and long-distance.
With short-distance running, the main test is speed. The runners aim to have a burst of speed that can place them in the top positions.
On the other hand, with long-distance running, the main test is endurance. Placing in the top positions at the beginning won’t do you any good, as you’ll soon get tired and start lagging behind. So you have to pace yourself and run strategically to ultimately come in the top positions at the end.
Some people also run barefoot, as there’s a movement where people believe we should reconnect with the human body. We talk to British natural life-stylist Tony Riddle, who’s also a barefoot running pioneer.
As an endurance athlete, he’s constantly seeking out ways to get in touch with his body for the best performance possible. Riddle’s managed to run the entire length of the UK in 30 days, covering a total of 874 miles.
Marathons are pretty big challenges, as you have to run 42.2 kilometres (26.2 miles). As you may have guessed, it takes lots of training to build up to. And even then, some runners aren’t able to complete them, due to the toll it takes on their bodies.
But in addition to marathons, there are also ultramarathons. These are any marathons that are longer than the traditional marathon.
We spoke to American ultramarathon athlete Dean Karnazes about his experiences in running. He’s run the Boston Marathon, Death Valley, and 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days!
Karnazes has also written a book called “Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner”. This book has all the ultimate tips and tricks for the average person to work up to an ultramarathon. So if you’re interested in running one, don’t forget to check out this book.
We also sit down with Tim Don, who’s won multiple triathlons and duathlons as a British Olympian and World Champion. In addition, he’s also set the world record for the IRONMAN competition in Brazil.
If just running sounds boring to you, then you’ll be pleased to know that there are several events that involve several obstacles to keep things interesting. For instance, there’s the Spartan Race, which was created by Joe De Sena.
The Spartan Race is one of the toughest competitive obstacle races in the world. De Sena created this race to challenge people to their limits so they can see what they’re capable of. We chat with him about what wishes to accomplish with his prestigious race.
