Plant-based: the case for eating vegan

Dr Michael Greger, author of How Not To Die, returns with How Not To Diet, which he says sets out the science of healthy weight loss. Dr Neal Barnard argues that food affects our hormones, and that the right diet can reduce pain and help people lose weight. Nimai Delgado explains how he built his physique as a natural vegan bodybuilder, and John Joseph makes his blunt case for plant-based athletes. Food writer Mark Bittman offers a middle route: eat vegan before 6pm. Rich Roll describes how changing what he ate changed his life as an ultra-endurance athlete.

Meat, paleo and the backlash

Dr Shawn Baker, an orthopaedic surgeon, argues that eating only meat made him mentally and physically stronger, and he returned in 2022 to make the case again. Tim Shieff, once one of the best-known vegan athletes, explains why he started eating animal products again to heal his body. Ben Pratt, author of Nutrition’s Playground, argues for a paleo approach, unpasteurised dairy and cutting out sugar and flour. Eric Edmeades, founder of WildFit, argues that modern diets drive conditions such as type 2 diabetes, and that changing how you eat can help people take back control.

Fasting, weight loss and alcohol

Joe Cross tells how, overweight and ill with an autoimmune disease in his early 40s, he turned to juicing and made the film Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. Mike Dolce, a weight management coach to top MMA fighters, shares his Living Lean approach. James Duigan, trainer to Elle Macpherson and author of The Clean & Lean Diet, explains his method. Tim Shieff talks about fasting as part of how he says he healed himself. Professor David Nutt argues that alcohol is the most damaging drug in the world, and Brian Rose explains how he stopped drinking.
