Meditation has moved from monasteries to offices and phones, but there are many ways to do it. London Real has asked monks, yoga teachers, scientists and authors what meditation is, how they practise it and what they believe it does. These conversations cover guided methods, breathwork, Hindu and Taoist traditions, and research into the meditating mind. Guests share their own practices and beliefs, not medical advice. Every full interview is free to watch.
From Mindvalley founder Vishen Lakhiani and bestselling author Dr Joe Dispenza to former monk Dandapani, the Iceman Wim Hof, biologist Dr Rupert Sheldrake, yoga teacher Kino MacGregor and spiritual teacher Radhanath Swami: how to start and deepen a meditation practice.
Vishen Lakhiani, founder of Mindvalley, walks through his 6 Phase Meditation, a short guided method that moves through steps such as gratitude, forgiveness and picturing the future. Stephen Russell, known as the Barefoot Doctor, draws on Taoism and shares what he calls eight easy steps to meditation. Dandapani, a Hindu priest who trained for ten years under his guru, treats concentration as a skill you practise daily, a theme he returns to in How To Raise Your Consciousness. Wim Hof explains how he combines breathing and cold exposure, which he says gives him control over his body.
Dr Joe Dispenza discusses his book Becoming Supernatural, in which he argues that ordinary people can use meditation to change their brain and body. He expands on this in Change Your Energy, Change Your Life. Dr Rupert Sheldrake, a Cambridge-trained biologist, looks at what scientific research says about spiritual practices such as meditation, and continues in Ways To Go Beyond. Kino MacGregor, an Ashtanga yoga teacher, describes yoga as an inner practice that builds strength of mind as well as body. These are the guests’ views, not medical advice.
Radhanath Swami, a guru and author who inspired a free school meals programme in India, explains how he believes looking within can turn struggles into strengths. Gaur Gopal Das offers a monk’s view of a calm mind. Mantak Chia teaches Taoist energy practices, and Christopher Divinity Dines discusses the mystery of belief. Hardcore singer and endurance athlete John Joseph talks about the spiritual practices behind his discipline, in a bonus from Brian Rose’s Ironmind film. For everyday awareness rather than formal practice, see Mindfulness.
