Conservation is about what we choose to protect before it is gone, from chimpanzees and coral reefs to fish stocks and a stable climate. London Real has spoken to people doing that work and to the people telling their stories. These conversations cover primate research, ocean campaigning, climate science, the documentary that brought Jane Goodall’s life to a new audience, and how entrepreneurs fund conservation causes. Every full interview is free to watch.
From the late primatologist Dr Jane Goodall and NASA climate scientist Dr Gavin Schmidt to The Black Fish founder Wietse van der Werf, documentary maker Brett Morgen, Wired co-founder Kevin Kelly and Karmagawa co-founder Timothy Sykes: protecting the natural world.
Dr Jane Goodall (1934 to 2025) talked to Brian at Windsor Castle about her wartime childhood, Louis Leakey, the chimpanzees of Gombe, empathy in science and her cautious hope for the planet. Brett Morgen, who directed the documentary Jane, explains how he approached telling her story. Wietse van der Werf founded The Black Fish, an international marine conservation movement that aims to end industrial overfishing by exposing illegal and destructive fishing practices. Trader Timothy Sykes co-founded the charity Karmagawa, which builds schools and backs conservation causes, although his episode focuses on trading.
Dr Gavin Schmidt, a climatologist and Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies at the time of his interview, explains how scientists study past, present and future climate change, and how climate models are built and tested. He has written over 120 publications on the subject. Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor of Wired and former editor of the Whole Earth Review, has also worked as a conservationist. His conversation focuses on technology and why we need to teach AI ethics.
