From Stripe co-founder John Collison and AGI researcher Dr Ben Goertzel to MIT professor Max Tegmark, computer scientist Dr Roman Yampolskiy, Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal, Code Club co-founder Clare Sutcliffe and NASA robotics engineer Dr Vytas SunSpiral: the people who write the code, and what it could do next.

Start here

AI: the code that could outgrow us

Dr Ben Goertzel, known for his work on artificial general intelligence, first asked whether AI will kill us in 2019. In 2023 he returned to discuss why Geoffrey Hinton, often called the godfather of AI, left Google, and the dangers Goertzel sees ahead. MIT professor Max Tegmark makes the case for stopping AI development and explains the risks he sees in GPT-4. Computer scientist Dr Roman Yampolskiy gives his own stark warning about where AI is heading. Their views differ in detail, but all three want the risks taken seriously.

Builders: payments, Web3 and the infrastructure underneath

John Collison, from Limerick, sold his first company at 17 before co-founding Stripe. He explains how Stripe made it easier for merchants to take payments online, a story he first told London Real in Earning His Stripe. Sandeep Nailwal, a software developer and co-founder of Polygon, talks about the Ethereum Merge. Tarun Chitra, CEO of the simulation platform Gauntlet, argues that applying AI to governance can make DeFi safer. Parul Gujral, CEO of Snowball, explains how on-chain identity and zero-knowledge proofs could bring Web3 to its next billion users. Ian Foddering, then CTO of Cisco UK & Ireland, describes the Internet of Things.

Learning to code, robots and new interfaces

Clare Sutcliffe co-founded Code Club in 2012 to teach children aged 9 to 11 to program, and by 2014 it had more than 2,000 clubs in the UK. Stef Lewandowski, known as Stef the Hacker, founded the startup studio Makeshift and believes in learning by hacking and making something every day. Geoff Stead, then head of mobile learning at Qualcomm, explains how touch screens can change education and where augmented reality is going. Dr Vytas SunSpiral of NASA describes how he uses human physiology and the study of animals to design better robots.

Programming on London Real: common questions

Who has London Real interviewed about programming and software? Brian Rose has interviewed John Collison, Dr Ben Goertzel, Max Tegmark, Dr Roman Yampolskiy, Sandeep Nailwal, Tarun Chitra, Parul Gujral, Clare Sutcliffe, Ian Foddering, Geoff Stead and Dr Vytas SunSpiral, among others.

Do the engineers think AI is dangerous? Several do. Max Tegmark has called for AI development to stop until it is safer, Roman Yampolskiy warns of an AI catastrophe, and Ben Goertzel discusses the dangers that led Geoffrey Hinton to leave Google. Other guests on this page focus on what code can build, from payments to Web3.

How is Programming different from Computers? Programming focuses on the people who write software and what they build with it, from AI to Web3. The Computers page covers technology more broadly, including hacking, attention and online life.
