Douglas Rushkoff is a distinguished media theorist, author, and documentarian, whose work focuses on human autonomy in a digital age. Known for his insightful perspectives on the digital age, Rushkoff has played a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the interconnected world we live in.

He is the author of fifteen bestselling books on media, technology and society and in 2013 was named one of the world’s ten most influential intellectuals by MIT. Today he serves as Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY in Queens where he recently founded the Laboratory for Digital Humanism and currently hosts the TeamHuman podcast.

In this episode of London Real, Brian Rose welcomes Douglas Rushkoff to the studio to discuss his work, writing and vision for our rapidly changing digital future.

Born on February 18, 1961, in New York City, Douglas Rushkoff developed an early interest in technology and media. He attended Princeton University, where he studied English Literature and graduated in 1983. It was during this time that he started to delve into the intersection of media, culture, and technology, setting the stage for a career that would be defined by innovative thinking.

Rushkoff’s journey as a media theorist began with his early works, including “Cyberia: Life in the Trenches of Hyperspace” (1994), which explored the burgeoning cyberculture of the 1990s. However, it was with “Media Virus: Hidden Agendas in Popular Culture” (1994) that he gained widespread recognition. In this book, Rushkoff introduced the concept of the media virus, exploring how ideas and narratives spread and replicate in the digital age.

In “Coercion: Why We Listen to What They Say” (1999), Rushkoff delved into the manipulative aspects of media and advertising, examining how persuasion techniques are employed in shaping public opinion. His ability to dissect and critique the influence of media on society marked him as a perceptive analyst of the digital landscape.

Rushkoff is renowned for his exploration of both the utopian and dystopian aspects of digital technology. In “Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age” (2010), he presented a compelling argument for digital literacy, urging individuals to understand the underlying codes that shape our digital experiences. This work highlighted his belief that to navigate the digital landscape effectively, individuals must become active participants rather than passive consumers.

Later, in “Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity” (2016), Rushkoff critiqued the hyper-growth mentality of the digital economy and the negative impact it can have on society. He proposed alternative models for economic and technological development that prioritise sustainability and human well-being.

In addition to his written works, Douglas Rushkoff has been an influential figure in the world of documentaries. His film “The Merchants of Cool” (2001) critically examined the impact of media and marketing on teenage culture. “Digital Nation” (2010), another documentary he co-produced, explored the consequences of excessive screen time and digital immersion.

Rushkoff’s role as a public intellectual extends beyond his written and visual works. He frequently contributes to discussions on the societal implications of emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, and the future of humanity in a digitally connected world.

In recent years, Douglas Rushkoff has become an advocate for a more human-centric approach to technology. His book “Team Human” (2019) argues for a reevaluation of our relationship with technology, emphasising the importance of preserving and enhancing human values in the face of technological advancements.

Douglas Rushkoff’s multifaceted career has positioned him as a leading voice in the exploration of technology’s impact on society. From his early writings to his documentaries and advocacy for a more human-centric digital future, Rushkoff continues to shape the discourse surrounding the digital age.

By challenging assumptions, offering critical insights, and proposing alternative perspectives, Rushkoff remains an indispensable figure for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the complex and interconnected world we inhabit.
