Mantak Chia is a Taoist teacher and author, born in Thailand in 1944, who founded the Universal Healing Tao system of qigong, meditation and energy practices. He is best known for his books on Taoist sexual practice, including The Multi-Orgasmic Man and Taoist Secrets of Love.
Brian Rose has interviewed Master Chia six times on London Real between 2017 and 2025. They have covered his early training in Thailand and his move to teach in New York, the inner smile, Chinese astrology, self-massage for the organs, dark room retreats, fasting, and above all sexual energy and how he teaches people to cultivate it.
Every episode is listed below in order, with a short summary.
Sexual Healing (May 2017). His first London Real interview, and the best introduction: his background in Thailand, how he started teaching in New York and the basics of his practice. For his latest thinking, watch Stop Wasting Your Sexual Energy (2025).
Short clips: Success Secrets (2017), Success Secrets (2018) and Success Secrets (2019).
The theme running through every interview is that sexual energy is the foundation of vitality. Chia teaches that men can learn to separate orgasm from ejaculation and conserve that energy, and that couples can cultivate it together.
In his first interview in 2017 Chia described the inner smile, a meditation in which you direct a sense of warmth and relaxation towards your own body and organs. He stressed that, like all his practices, it only works if you actually do it.
Speaking in 2018, Chia demonstrated self-massage techniques he says keep the vital organs healthy. In 2025 he argued that stress and emotional trauma are held in the organs and can be released through Taoist practice.
Central to his system is the Microcosmic Orbit, a meditation in which practitioners visualise energy moving up the spine and down the front of the body. He presents it as the base for his other practices, including qigong and tai chi.
In November 2018 Chia talked about dark room retreats, Taoist nutrition and fasting as ways to rest the body and mind. He frames these as old practices that suit a stressed modern life.
