Full transcript: Dr Joe Vitale on London Real
2:29 This is London Real. I am Brian Rose.
2:42 My guest today is Dr Joe Vitale, the spiritual healer, author, international speaker and musician. You are best known as one of the world’s leading personal growth experts, spending a large part of your career helping people achieve their goals by teaching them to overcome their limiting beliefs and empowering them to create positive change. You are one of the central stars in the hugely successful film The Secret, which is credited with transforming the lives of millions of people around the world through the use of the Law of Attraction.
3:10 As an author, you’ve written over 80 best-selling books, including Zero Limits, The Secret to Attracting Money, and Life’s Missing Instruction Manual. Your latest book, Your Unlimited Self, Nine Proven Techniques to Clear Your Mind and Attract the Right Results, explores the scientific measures that can help remove the roadblocks that stop us from achieving our goals. You believe that our actions and outlook are driven by our subconscious mind, and when we change our beliefs, everyone is capable of building the life they’ve always dreamed of.
3:40 Show, welcome back to London Real. Are you kidding me? Third time to be here. I’m bitty. I can’t believe it.
3:48 I’m excited. Wow, I’m excited. Thank you. I’m excited too, Joe. It’s always great to have you here.
3:54 I’m really feeling this vibe. I got a lot to talk to you about as well, including some recent experiences for me, so look, I love to jump into it and cover all the great stuff that you talk about and the new book. You know, a bunch of people texted me today and said, oh, is that the guy from The Secret? Is that guy from The Secret? And I’m like, yeah, and I’d love it if we could just talk about that, you know, right out the gate, because a lot of people know you from being in this movie that was a huge blockbuster 10, 15 years ago, maybe, and, you know, it was something I think the world really hadn’t seen, and it put this idea into people’s minds that, you know, maybe your power of your thought was stronger than people believed it was, but I remember the last time you were here, you said, Brian, since the movie was so short, they didn’t actually understand everything I was saying, because you can’t just think of the dream house and have it, or if think of the business you want and have it, or think of the relationship, you’ve got to do more deep work, and I think that’s deep work on your subconscious.
4:50 But tell me, what do people get right about the movie The Secret, and what do they get wrong about the movie The Secret? Well, it’s a great place to start. I love the movie. I’d be telling people to watch it whether I was in it or not. It had a profound effect on the planet, and still is.
5:06 It’s traveling around the world and awakening people. What it’s doing right, and what people are getting right, is the idea that your thoughts create, that’s powerful. Most people don’t even know that. Most people lead lives, as Thoreau said, of quiet desperation, and so they’re living to their grave as a victim. They don’t know that they have power.
5:25 They don’t know that they have choice. They don’t know that they can set an intention and actually move in the direction of it, which is the basics of the Law of Attraction. But the movie didn’t completely explain everything, and I always defend it. It’s like, it’s a freaking movie. It wasn’t a graduate course, you know?
5:42 This wasn’t the tutorial on how to create your own reality. It introduced a principle, and that’s all it did. So a people got the principle, and most people did wonderful. The movie succeeded, and still is succeeding, but what it didn’t go into, and what people are missing, is the is the follow through, so to speak. I’m even in the movie saying when you have an idea you have to take action.
6:04 I even say it’s your job, and a lot of people watch the movie and say, hey, I saw you in it, Joe, but they fogged out when I got to that part, because a lot of people want magical thinking. They want to sit there, visualize the romance, visualize the car, visualize the house, visualize the bike, the motorcycle, whatever, and have the doorbell ring, and they open it up and there’s the love of their life. I don’t dismiss that. I do believe in magic and miracles.
6:31 My shirt says Expect Miracles, so my mindset is there, but I’m enough of a take-action, entrepreneurial, prolific, productive guy to say, you have to co-create what you want. Visualizing it, intending it, thinking about it is only step one. That’s the Law of Attraction. What do you want? Answer the question, but after that, you have to actually do something.
6:54 The example I often give, you mentioned in the introduction, I’ve written over 80 some books. If I had only sat and visualized being an author and imagine being an author and felt being an author but never went to the typewriter in the old days, or the computer these days, you would not know me as an author. At some point I had to get off my butt and put it in a chair, turn on the electric typewriter back in the old days, and start pounding the keys. So learning that your mind creates that’s powerful, but you also learn that your body has to have the follow through, and you have to take action to co-create what you want to manifest.
7:31 Yeah, that’s really well, well said. It really needs both. And again, I would say probably, Joe, 90 some percent of the world is walking around not even believing that your thoughts can manifest things. I mean, just because everything we’re taught from kids, I went to school at MIT, got an engineering degree, trust me, there was no class that said if you think this, this will happen. The whole basis of that institution is the opposite of that, right?
7:54 Everything is down to physics and particles that are all predetermined, and so a lot of us grew up in this world where, yeah, we kind of default to that victim status, or default to everything’s not in our control. When the thought makes it actually in our control, but then, like you said, then it takes the action, which is the stuff that makes us uncomfortable, that makes us quote, unquote, fail, whatever that means, and maybe that’s why people fog over. Maybe that’s the subconscious saying, yeah, it’s a great dream, but you know, I’m just gonna maybe just sit back a little bit, yeah, and hope that it shows up, and again, it might, but you have to really do the inner work to make things happen.
8:33 You really have to get rid of the invisible blocks, right? Down to believing that anything is possible. If you don’t believe that your thoughts create, you already have fueled a thought of limitation. You’ve actually proven the concept. Your thought created a limitation, but if you don’t go past that to realize that you can create your own reality by thinking differently, most of us are married to our thoughts.
8:56 When we have a thought, we think that’s us a great breakthrough, and this is going to be an awakening right here if people have never heard it before, is the understanding that you are not your thoughts. You have thoughts. It seems to be part of the organic human experience that they just bubble up into consciousness, but most of us, until we wake up, feel we are our thoughts, and so when the thoughts are depressing, we feel depressed. If the thoughts are downers, we feel down.
9:24 If the thoughts are discouraging, we feel discouraged. We don’t realize that, wait a minute, we’re separate from the thought. We can choose to listen to it, or we can select a different thought, or wait for another thought, and then go in a new direction, which will make taking that action a little easier. There’s, there’s so many levels to this. It’s, I don’t even know where to begin to start to help people.
9:45 Yeah, there are so many levels, but that one is a great way to start. To people like you said, you’re having depressing thoughts one day, okay, well, those are just those thoughts. You’re really, you’re the, you’re the container. You’re the bigger thing than that, and if you can just say, okay, I’m just having a day or an hour or a minute where I’m getting some depressive thoughts, just like it’s raining in London right now. Uh, go figure, but it was sunny yesterday, and it’s just something that’s happening.
10:10 It doesn’t necessarily define who you are. That’s, that’s a big start. You know, right away just to separate yourself from that. And then you said something else which I think is interesting, Joe, because you said it’s not just about the thought, it’s actually really truly believing it. And I know a lot of people probably listening, and I did this, asked you, you know, you say an affirmation, you know, I’m gonna be a billionaire, I’m going to be happy, but deep down inside, you don’t really believe it, and so you might as well just be reading the ingredients on your toothpaste tube at the end of the day, and you go, you go deep on this, don’t you?
10:44 Oh, I love talking about it. Affirmations are one way to program the mind, but we really got to understand how they work first. I remember having lunch with a woman years ago, and she said, I tried affirmations, affirmations don’t work for me, and I listened to her, then I looked at her and said, do you realize what you said was an affirmation? You just affirmed affirmations don’t work for me, and as a result you have the experience that affirmations aren’t working, which means you proved that affirmations were so.
11:14 It gets a little twisted. It’s cynical, but you have to awaken to the reality that what we’re telling ourselves are affirmations. When we sit here, maybe somebody’s watching this, is my third time with you, but maybe it’s the first time for somebody watching, and they say to themselves, none of this stuff works for me, or that guy’s just full of, full of it. It’s all BS. Those are affirmations they’re repeating their own limitations enough that they believe them.
11:40 The thing to realize is that you can change the direction, you can change the direction and start saying, like, “Affirmations do work. I intend to be a billionaire or a millionaire or have hundreds of thousands of dollars show up unexpectedly.” When you first say these new affirmations, they won’t feel real, because they’re butting up against the existing affirmations that are already hardwired in your brain. So we have to remind ourselves: the way I got here is through the affirmations that were stated unconsciously when I was homeless back in the ’70s in Dallas and struggling.
12:19 My affirmations were negations. It’s like, nothing’s working out for me, it’s me against the world. I felt totally alone. I was angry, and everything I repeated were affirmations of self-destruction, but I didn’t know it. I didn’t know it because I wasn’t in a coaching program.
12:36 We didn’t have a show like this. I was learning the best I could from the public library and reading books, but for the most part it was a slow process until I realized how I already got to that point, homeless and later in poverty, and traveling up the path of awakening was by paying attention to my thinking. The existing thinking is from the previous affirmations. When we introduce new affirmations, we’re going to feel like, oh, I’m just lying to myself.
13:02 Of course you’re lying to yourself. You’re starting a new self-creation at this very point in time. As you keep repeating it, you’ll get more comfortable with it. It’ll rewire your brain, and it’ll start to become the new truth. It’ll become second nature to you, to the point where you don’t think about it anymore, because now you have a new mindset.
13:25 How did you get it? By creating a new habit, the habit of positive affirmations. Again, when you first start them, they’re not going to feel comfortable, because you’re doing something you haven’t done before, and it’s butting against the software that’s already in your brain. Yeah, and I know your thoughts on affirmations changed over the years. I know at one point you weren’t a fan, but now it sounds like you are.
13:46 I hate this phrase, but I’m going to say it to you: fake it until you make it. But with affirmations, I started doing mine about five years ago, uh, and I really, it took time, but I’m a big believer of them now. Is that, you know, you say it in the beginning, and you’re like, well, how can this possibly work? And then I just made it a habit every single morning, and I started seeing some of them happen, or I started adopting the persona of someone that was those affirmations, and I saw real traction with it.
14:16 But you kind of changed your mind over time? I did, and I’m very impressed with the number of people that you interview, how you would remember something that I gave away as a throwaway comment a long time ago. So I’m impressed with you, and thank you. That’s an honor, that you remembered it, and I’m also flattered. I think affirmations don’t go deep enough.
14:37 I think affirmations are the long approach to self-change. I’m not dismissing them, because we got to start someplace, and by the explanation and the dialogue you and I just had here, it may be the breakthrough that somebody’s been waiting for, that can finally realize, wait, I don’t have to listen to the negative voice in my head. I can create a cheerleader of sorts. That cheerleader now has new affirmations. I’m going to start listening to the cheerleader in my brain.
15:02 Now you’re moving in a whole new direction. I think it’s more powerful, and this is going to the next level. It’s going a step deeper, and ties into a lot of my current books and current research, and that is the idea that you use the affirmations to uncover the limiting blocks that are in the subconscious mind. For example, if somebody is sitting there and they say, well, I really do want to have more money, and Dr Joe says, if I just start saying I am now attracting more money, I’ll move in that direction.
15:33 That’s cool. That is a start. That’s using an affirmation, but the next level is to pay attention to the rebuttal statements in your own head when you say, I am now going to attract being a millionaire, whatever it is for somebody, and their little voice comes up and says, how in the world will that ever happen? That’s not going to happen to me. It happens to Brian, it happens to Joe, it happens to the people in The Secret.
15:55 It doesn’t happen to me. All of that chatter needs to be cleared. That chatter is revealing the beliefs of limitation that are deeper than the affirmations, and in fact, when we release and erase those deeper levels of subconscious blocks, now the affirmations can deep dive and launch that can lodge, because there isn’t any interference. So the affirmations are just on a surface level powerful, but also I would say use them to uncover the blocks in the subconscious, slash, unconscious mind.
16:30 As you find those, then we can start working on clearing them. When you clear them, magic happens at that point, because you accelerate your results. The blocks are gone, and the blocks were all inside of you. They’re not outside. That’s what we all look, but actually it’s inside.
16:45 Yeah, I really love the way you put that. You know, I train martial arts, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is something I’ve been rolling for about 20 years, and the people don’t know, when you start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you know, your first few months you’re taught a few of these techniques, submission techniques, and you get a white belt, which just means you’re kind of starting now. If you train for about 10 years, you’ll get a black belt. And you know, a white belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after a few months, you know, can actually choke someone unconscious and do some stuff, and so a little bit of learning can get you a long way, and I would say, I would say, that as an analogy.
17:17 If you watch the movie The Secret, that alone will probably get you a step change of potentially, you know, 10 times better of the way of looking at life. But then again, if you really want to get to the black belt level, you’re gonna have to say, okay, where’s the action, where’s the subconscious? Same with affirmations. I’d say if you’re not doing them, starting to do them well, first of all, immediately accelerate you forward, but over time, if you want to get black belt at it, you have to listen to, like you said, the feedback of the chatter and start going deep on why you’re really not buying your own affirmations, and do that work subconsciously in order to break through.
17:51 And, uh, so I know we’re hitting a bunch of different levels here. Let’s talk about doing that subconscious work, because I think that’s a lot of what your work is about. How, how do people start to address the subconscious, Joe? You know, that’s the million dollar question right there. How do you address the subconscious?
18:11 And maybe we have to look at why it’s important to address it. Most of us are just driven by our conscious mind. We’re listening to our thoughts as we mentioned earlier. Most of them, most of us think we are our thoughts. Most of us think our thoughts are the only things that we have in terms of choice.
18:25 So the thought comes in, we obey the thought, and our life just keeps stuck. We’re just cycling through the same old problems. For most people, it’s, it’s a relationship problem. Another person might have a health problem, another person a financial problem. Each person seems to specialize at a particular block, and they keep cycling through it.
18:43 They get a little break, then they have the problem again. They get a little break, they have the problem again, and it isn’t until there’s a wake-up, and maybe it is for some people today, and they look within. They go, well, maybe it’s me. Maybe there’s something in me that’s running a program, that’s running, that is creating and recreating and re-running the very same problem, especially when it’s different for each person. We’ve each got a different program, so it keeps running there.
19:09 That’s the first level, is to realize there’s something deeper. The deeper thing is the subconscious. What I use, subconscious and unconscious, interchangeably. It is the, the iceberg below. What is C?
19:21 That’s the iceberg underneath the, the water, and that is the big database of experiences and programming and memories. And depending on what psychology and philosophy you look at, it can contain everything from past lives, or at least from your, your downline, your epigenetics lineage. Right there, it can all be in your subconscious, and we live from our subconscious. We think we’re living from our conscious, but we’re living from our subconscious. It’s causing us to take actions.
19:50 It’s causing us to, to think in a different way, to believe in a different way, and if we want to do any change, it isn’t just on the conscious. We have to go into the subconscious and kind of rewire it, clean it up, cut some wires, so to speak, in the software of the mind. And this is one reason why affirmations aren’t my number one favorite thing to do, because we’re still working on the conscious mind. We’re trying to change the thoughts there with repeated use, and using it the way we’ve already described will have an effect in the subconscious mind.
20:22 We’ll start to do the work there, but the really heavy-duty work needs to be in the subconscious. And Brian, I, I’m sorry, this is where I get on a soapbox, because I think this is my contribution to the whole self-help industry. I think there’s what I’m calling a missing secret, and the missing secret is that you can intend all you want. You can visualize all you want. You can do every fancy, latest, greatest, trendy, new-agey technique and self-help, self-improvement technique that comes out that you want to try.
20:52 That’s great, and they will work as long as you don’t have a block in your subconscious. If you can get what you want by saying, and this is what I’m affirming, this is what I’m going to take action for, and then you’ll go ahead and you create it. You didn’t have a block. You did it. You’re done.
21:08 You can go on to the next thing. But if you’re repeatedly saying, I’m affirming more money, or I’m affirming health, or I’m affirming relationship, but, damn it, block, block, block, it doesn’t seem to happen to me. It’s probably a block in the subconscious. We have to go there. That’s what I think is the missing secret.
21:26 The self-help world doesn’t seem to talk about it enough. I’m sure other people are, but I often feel like a lone voice. I think back to when I was homeless. I was living in the Dallas Public Library, so on one level it was bliss. I was with books, but on another level I had no money, no home, no car, no relationship, nothing else, and I remember reading Think and Grow Rich around 1975.
21:51 Think and Grow Rich, one of the greatest self-improvement books of all time, a masterpiece that’s made more millionaires than any other book that I’ve ever heard of. So, so I’m really thinking, Grow Rich, and when I’m done I’m still broke. I’m still broke, and I’m going, what’s wrong? What’s wrong with the book? What’s wrong with me?
22:07 What’s missing? And it took me a decade, to two decades, to realize there wasn’t anything wrong with me, and what was missing is that you have to get clear of the inner blocks in your subconscious before you can Think and Grow Rich, or whatever it is that you’re trying to achieve. This, this is huge, Brian. I don’t even know how to get it across. Yeah, and I think in the book you kind of say, or you use this term, you must clear a path before you can build the road, and you start going into these techniques of trying to clear, I guess, the subconscious and try to clear these things out.
22:41 You have a bunch of different ways. Of course, the classic that I always remember you for is the, um, is the Ho’oponopono. I probably messed that up as one of your great clearing techniques, because I always remember you for that, um, but I guess, and I’m kind of moving into the book now, but is that really what the book is about, nine of those techniques to go for the subconscious? That’s exactly what it’s for. The book is called Your Unlimited Self, Nine Proven Techniques to Clear Your Mind and Attract the results you want.
23:10 So the nine techniques are all about clearing the mind, and this all ties into the missing secret. This is what explains when people get results. They’ve cleared the blocks. When they get them faster than ever before, it’s because they cleared the blocks. I have numerous stories from my own life.
23:26 I think you and I talked about me being a musician at one point. The very quick story is when I had turned 60, which at this point was almost 10 years ago, I decided I wanted to be a musician, and that was great. I stated my intention. We all have heard about stating intentions. I stated my intention.
23:41 Next thing that happened was profound fear and self-doubt. And I’ve said, whenever you try to do something you’ve never done before, you’re going to feel fear. You’re leaving your comfort zone. I was leaving my comfort zone. I almost gave up on being a musician, because I almost talked myself out of it.
23:59 I almost listened to the monkey mind saying, are you, you can’t do it, and let the doubts rule, and then I realized, wait a minute, I’m the guy who was in The Secret. I’m the guy who was teaching people to go for their dreams and expect miracles, so I had to get clear. I had to go within myself to find out what were the limiting beliefs, delete those beliefs. And then the short story is going from nothing, no music experience, no musical background, had never been in the studio as a musician, didn’t have a band.
24:28 Anyway, I have a band I perform with, the Band of Legends. We’ve recorded. I have 15 albums, six of them singer-songwriter albums. Some of my music’s been used in movies. Some of my songs were nominated for the Posi Awards.
24:41 I’m saying all this to prove that once you get clear of those hidden beliefs in the subconscious, the things that you were wanting to create, to attract as results in your life, you’ve collapsed time. They happen almost instantaneously. You still do the work, but the work is play, and the results are fast. That’s what this whole book is about: getting clear to get the results. Now, I’m guessing when you want to sneak up on the subconscious, you gotta sneak up on it.
25:12 You gotta probably do some things that the conscious mind maybe resists or doesn’t understand, because, again, like you said, you’re dealing with everything below the surface, and that conscious mind, you know, maybe it doesn’t even like to admit that there’s anything below the surface, and so it has to kind of trust the process. I’m guessing to go into some of these clearing techniques, am I getting that right? Am I slightly off with some of these? You’re giving me something to think about that I hadn’t really looked at before.
25:39 I don’t think the subconscious mind is trying to dodge the beliefs or the programs that are within it. I, I feel that with a little bit of probing that you find them. It’s like just turning the light on in a dark room. It’s like, oh, there they are, right over there. They weren’t hiding, and they’re not scary.
25:59 This isn’t some sort of Freudian secret demon box where we’re going to unlock it and then all the spooky stuff comes out. That’s not what this is about. We’re only looking for the blocks to having, doing, and being what we want. For example, if somebody’s sitting right now and they’re saying to themselves, okay, this all sounds great, I’m ready to attract my soulmate, and they want romance in their life, they want to start dating again. That’s great, that’s their intention.
26:24 I would say the next level is to pay attention to what’s coming up in your mind. Is that self-talk behind it? Are you fully endorsing that belief, and are you starting to go to socials or go online or join some groups or matchmaking this or that? I don’t know what’s out there, what people do today, but are you doing that, or are you not taking any action at all, because you’re starting to think, I’m too old, I’m too fat, I’m too thin, I’m too whatever, and all the good ones are taken.
26:56 Those are, these are limiting beliefs, and when we become aware of them, then we can move into questioning them and erasing them. I don’t think there’s a hide-and-seek game. I think there’s simply the intention that I want to have a result, and I’d like to find out what’s in the way of it, so we’re going to go into exploring the subconscious mind. Okay, good. I’m glad you cleared that up.
27:18 We got to talk about the Ho’oponopono technique, because I remember it from last time, but I also don’t remember it as a clearing technique. I remembered it as well. You know, again, I remember the four things, but do you mind talking about that? I know you’re probably world famous for it, but could you talk about that one, because it’s in there? Yeah, I, I love talking about Ho’oponopono, and I’ve at this point written three separate books about it, and of course we use it as a clearing technique in this new book, Your Unlimited Self.
27:46 Ho’oponopono is incredibly profound. It is a spiritual healing technique that is used for clearing, and what we’re clearing is our perceptions that are in the way of recognizing the Divine Miracle of the moment. And I know that’s a mouthful all by itself, but let me back up. The story in short is that there had been a therapist who helped heal an entire ward of mentally ill criminals at the state hospital in Hawaii. The punch line here is that he agreed to be there, but he wasn’t going to do traditional therapy.
28:21 The patients were violent criminals. They were shackled or sedated daily, and doctors and nurses, social workers, were quitting every day. It was just a hellish experience. He said, I will go and work at that hospital, but I’m not going to work in a traditional way. I’m going to close the door of my office and I’m going to do my own brand of therapy.
28:39 And what he did was look at his files for those patients, and he practiced this thing that’s called Ho’oponopono. Ho’oponopono is a way of changing the inside of you to cause a ripple effect and outer change. So he’s looking at the files of these despicable, criminally insane inmates, and as he’s looking at it, he’s feeling rage, he’s feeling embarrassment, he’s feeling grief, he’s feeling confusion. All kinds of things are going through him, and what he’s doing is he’s closing his eyes.
29:11 He’s going into his heart. He’s feeling his emotions, and then, as a kind of a prayer, as a kind of petition to what he would call the Divine, but these days I just call the great something, he would be saying four key phrases, and the four key phrases anybody can say today: I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.
29:33 I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. As he would say those four phrases, what he was cleaning and clearing on was his own emotions.
29:44 This is why it’s a clearing technique. He was noticing that his judgment of these files, which were representing these people, was causing him to no longer be at peace. He needed to be at peace, so he’s doing: I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you. It was a way to correct the perceptions of what he was seeing on those charts. As he started to feel more at peace, now he feels like he’s complete.
30:10 The miracle happens in a way that I still haven’t been able to explain, because the outer mirrors the inner. The patients, the ones that were shackled or sedated, started to get better. They didn’t have to be shackled. They didn’t have to be sedated. Within months some of them were being pronounced as being whole and healed and released back into society, and all we can see is that the therapist was doing Ho’oponopono.
30:38 I, of course, heard the story when looking for the therapist. I found the therapist. I co-wrote with him the first book, Zero Limits, telling all of this. We did three seminars together, and he passed away this year, but he left the legacy. He left an impact, and he left this technique.
30:56 So when somebody is sitting there and they’re thinking, well, I want to attract health, maybe they’re not feeling so great, or they’ve got something where the medical people are saying, that’s incurable, or go write your will, go on home, because that’s it for you. Ho’oponopono would say, look inside yourself, and how do you feel about it? How do you feel? Are you angry? Are you enraged because of this?
31:18 Are you doubting it? Are you fearful? Where, where are you at emotionally? And how Ho’oponopono would be brought in: I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, to help you clear your emotions. When you clear your emotions, which is cleaning the subconscious mind, you are now at a place, first of all, of serenity and, second of all, clarity.
31:40 This means you can look around, and you might see options you didn’t see before when you’re coming from fear. My God, the blinders are, you are on. You can’t see your opportunities all around you. But then when you’re at serenity and you can see your opportunities, you can see your choices. You can use wisdom to choose something that may heal you, and if not, you’re now at peace, which is what you wanted all along anyway.
32:05 It is incredibly powerful. I have seen it used, and heard it used, for probably anything anybody would ever mention. And this doctor, he just was in his office repeating this to himself. He didn’t get the, he didn’t get the inmates to do it. No, he didn’t get anybody else to do it.
32:25 After a while, some of the social workers or nurses would come up to him and say, we don’t know what you’re doing, but whatever it is, do it for us too. And then other ones would say, can you tell us what you’re doing? But as far as I know, and of course I had interviewed the social workers, interviewed Dr Hew Len who was the therapist. No, he never taught it to them. He was doing it as an inside job.
32:48 Fascinating. You know, um, I’m just coming up with a bunch of things. I’m just going to blurt them out. You know, these days, uh, plant medicine is popular in the world, and, um, some people drink things like ayahuasca. I’ve had my own experiences, but if you go back into the history of the shamans, traditionally you would go to see the shaman.
33:07 The shaman would drink the ayahuasca to heal you, and you, you weren’t consuming it, but you could consume it, because they were changing their energy state. And again, I just seen this, because it sounds something similar to what this guy was doing. And it’s amazing, you know, say someone who is super enlightened or calm that walks into the room, it can change an entire room if people feel that energy, whether they’re inspired by it or combine it or whatever.
33:32 I mean, you know, take it with the Dalai Lama walks in the room, like, you know, all of a sudden, just, it just can change the vibe of it. So for people that initially think, well, how could that possibly be true? Like, it, it kind of can be true, and that kind of a peace and energy is, I guess, infectious, and I guess that’s what happened. Been in this prison somehow. Yes, well, I ended up writing three books about Ho’oponopono.
33:54 Zero Limits was the first that, by far, has taken the world by storm, introduced it to humanity around the planet, and then, 10 years later, I wrote At Zero, because I had heard so many questions, and I answered them. And then, fairly recently, I wrote the fifth phrase, because I was introduced to a fifth phrase to use on top of the first four. The way to understand Ho’oponopono, at least in my opinion, is that its philosophy is that there is nothing outside of you.
34:23 It’s all an illusion. There’s a little bit of Buddhism in there and a little bit of Jungian psychology in there, because it’s saying that everything else is a mirror, and so if there’s anything anything on the outside that’s bothering you, it’s not really the outside. I know when the therapist Dr Hew Len and I did seminars together, one of his favorite questions would be, have you ever noticed that when you have a problem, you are there, you’re participating in it, you’re creating it?
34:54 To use secret terms, you are attracting it, but you’re not doing it consciously. It’s not like you sat there and said, well, I’m going to create homelessness, I’m going to create this encounter with my neighbor or employee or a vendor. We didn’t consciously do that. Subconsciously, it was there, and it got manifested into what you’re perceiving to be reality. But if you go back into where it all started and you dilute it with Ho’oponopono, I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, you then change what’s actually causing the reflection.
35:28 It’s almost like your mind is an old movie projector, you know, and it’s just shooting out what you’re observing, but you are not just observing it. You’re in it. You’re in the movie of your life, but it’s being projected from inside of you. And if you want to change the movie of your life, one of the nine different ways you can do it is Yeah, it’s beautiful. Uh, a friend of mine and a guest on the show, his name is Wes Watson, spent 10 years in the California prison system.
35:56 He has a phrase. He says, the world you don’t see, the world through um, a window, you, you see it through a mirror. And it’s interesting. It’s the way he just, and when people first hear that, what are you talking about? But it’s like, you know, he also says that the way you view the world is a secret confession of self.
36:13 And these are the hard things for people to hear, because, like you said, they’re like, no, no, there’s a problem, or that person’s bad, or blah blah blah blah blah. But it, it’s all you. Believe me, but it is all you. And that is the hardest thing for people to get, especially with Ho’oponopono, because it’s so easy to point fingers. It is so easy to say, it’s not me.
36:34 It’s COVID. It’s the authorities. It’s the president. It’s the terrorists. It’s climate.
36:40 It’s pick something. It’s really easy to just throw responsibility somewhere else, and that’s part of the wake-up, and maybe that’s a recurring theme for our time together today. It’s the wake-up: if you really want to create your reality, you want to manifest some of the things you’ve been longing for in your life, you’ve got to take your power back. You’ve got to bring it back into yourself, into your awareness, into your field of choice. When we sit there and go, well, my life would be great if it wasn’t for my parents, or my life would be great if it wasn’t for, putting the blank, just pick somebody, and now we’ve got somebody as our scapegoat.
37:17 Now we can say it’s all their fault, and we don’t change. We don’t do anything. But if we can bring it all inside of ourselves and go, okay, you know, the way I was brought up, they did the best they could. Whatever’s going on in the world doesn’t necessarily have to affect me personally, and go inside and make choices from our ability to choose our own direction. Now we’re in power.
37:37 But I would say that one of the big complaints people have about Ho’oponopono is they don’t want to take responsibility. They don’t want it to, to have it on their shoulders. And to practice it, do you repeat those four phrases kind of over and over again? What’s the best way if people want to try it? Yeah, well, first of all, I would say try it just like you just said.
38:01 I would notice what’s going on in the world and what’s going on in the person’s life. Almost everybody has something they’re wrestling with virtually all the time. Pick whatever’s going on in your life, notice that it’s inside of you, notice that your perceptions about it being a problem or not, are not outside where you’re experiencing it. It is a problem, is not outside you experience a problem inside yourself. It’s the only place you can experience it.
38:25 It is a problem. So as we come inside of ourselves and we realize, okay, this is what I’m experiencing, pretend that you’re talking to your version of God, the Divine, Gaia. An atheist could say nature, or the great cosmos, or the energy field of all possibilities. As I said earlier, I just call it the great something. Joseph Campbell called it the great unknown, I think, or the great mystery.
38:48 And so we have this conversation. We just say, I don’t know where all these feelings are coming from. I don’t know what created it, but thank you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.
38:57 I love you. I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.
39:00 You can say it in any order. You never say it out loud. You never say it to another person. It’s an internal experience, like a private prayer that you’re saying. And since I’m, I seem to have the floor, let me explain this one more minute of how this works.
39:16 When you say, I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, it’s kind of shorthand for a longer process. You’re basically saying, I’m sorry for whatever the belief is in me that I’m not aware of. Please forgive me for being unconscious to the operating system that’s in my own mind. Thank you for resolving this, clearing this, erasing it, rewiring it, whatever it takes to return to peace and to remove the limiting program in the subconscious. And I love you for the process.
39:47 I love you for my life. I love you for filling the blank you want to move into a state of love. So when you’re saying, I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, there’s a little bit more going on, and I’ll say one more thing. I’ve done this enough to know that a lot of people object to saying I’m sorry or please forgive me. It’s like, I didn’t do anything wrong, and it’s like, this is, that’s not where we’re coming from.
40:09 We’re saying I’m sorry and please forgive me for being unaware, being unconscious, and I use the example that if you go to a crowded store and you bump into somebody, don’t you naturally turn and say I’m sorry, because you didn’t see them there? It doesn’t mean you need to be flogged. You didn’t do any crime, kind of deserving punishment experience. You just bumped into somebody. That’s the level of consciousness when you say I’m sorry, please forgive me.
40:38 It’s like, I was unaware. I didn’t know that this was going on in my brain, so I’m sorry it was there. Please forgive me for the programming that I was unconscious to receiving. Thank you for clearing it up, and I love you for the healing. That’s kind of the longer process that’s going on.
40:55 Beautiful. I love this technique. I’m going to give it a try tonight and this weekend and see what happens. And now it makes more sense to me that you’re saying this quietly to yourself, and then I like how you expanded on it as well. And look, if you can’t say I’m sorry or please forgive me, that should be a pretty obvious, uh, a flag that you got that the ego is in the way here somewhere.
41:15 Thank you for saying that. I have often said that if you can’t say I’m sorry, please forgive me, then you better say I’m sorry or please forgiving, exactly, because your ego is blinding you to what’s going on. Very well done, Brian. Yeah, and again, I just had another thought. Um, uh, one of my mentors, I, I meet some pretty colorful people in this in this job.
41:34 Uh, his name is Dan Peña. He’s known as the trillion dollar man. He’s got a castle in Scotland, apparently, he uses my tailor as well, but he has a phrase where he says any problem in your life will immediately be replaced by an even bigger problem, and it’s funny when he says that, because what he’s really trying to say is your problems are coming from inside of you. You know, yes, and if you’re aware of that, and if you think about your life, you’re always like, yeah, as soon as I solve that one problem, I always have this other problem, and then I have this other problem, and yeah, because they’re all coming from inside of you.
42:04 So if you, exactly, if you can acknowledge that you’ll probably look at your entire life differently, as opposed to this stream of consciousness of, oh man, there’s that, and then there’s that, and then there’s that. And except I’ve, I’ve heard another mentor that said what they actually want in their life is high-quality problems, because you know you’re always going to have problems, so let’s just have high-quality problems. Like, my Lamborghini keeps breaking down.
42:28 I, I have to pay so much taxes because I’m making so much money. Uh, yeah, I have too happy all the time, my face hurts because I’m laughing, you know. So I don’t know, I’m just throwing out some ideas there, but I, it’s, it’s, if people do think about it, it’s true. Any problem you have somehow always seems to be replaced by another one. Yeah, it seems like the subconscious mind is creating a fill-in-the-void kind of a game.
42:50 If you get rid of one problem, it’s like, oh, we have a void there, let’s move something else over. But when you catch on to it, you kind of realize, oh, this is what my mind is doing, then you can either stop it or exchange it, upgrade it, like you just did. I like that. My Lamborghini keeps breaking down. That’s good.
43:07 I just bought a Lamborghini, so I’m listening to that one, and, uh, and just have fun with all of this. You can actually, uh, upgrade your life. Yeah, you could see the tricks that your brain is playing with you. I don’t dream very often, but I’ve had a couple dreams in the last year where I laugh out loud when I wake up, because I’m like, you know, that subconscious mind went right to my button and pushed it, and they created that dream, and, like, I just saw what you did because I remember the dream, and you were very clever about bringing, like, my mom into it, and have her say something when I was a kid, and I caught you.
43:39 You’re totally busted on that one. And again, it just reminded me of how it can, and create this reality for my conscious brain, and I have to realize, oh yeah, of course it’s always going to create these new problems. Hey, let’s look at it as a game. All right, cool. My job is not to react to that today, and to realize that it’s always going to have an inventory of them, and I’m just going to accept them, maybe do a little, uh, Ho’oponopono and just say thank you.
44:04 I appreciate that. As we’re talking, it occurs to me that there’s one more thing that we can do that’s probably a better idea, since the subconscious mind needs to, to be kept busy. It’s almost like a little child there, and if you don’t give it something to do, it’s got to go brick the house and paint the walls and poop on the floor. It’s going to be like a puppy or a little kid, so what we need to do is give it an assignment. And this goes back to, I don’t know if it was the first time I was on your show or the second time, where I talked about the reticular activating system, which is operating in the subconscious mind, and it’s basically the part of us that’s already programmed for survival, so it’s on the alert for problems.
44:43 It’s looking for problems, even great problems, because, trying to help us survive, it’s already doing that, but we can program it to help us attract what we want, which ties into The Secret, The Law of Attraction, and some of the early part of the discussion for today. So rather than letting the subconscious mind be this little puppy or brat, little kid, the Dennis the Menace of the mental world, and it’s going out there and it’s creating problems, let’s assign it to create miracles for us. So this means now we go into our mind and we, we select what we want.
45:18 The power of intention: what would you like to have, do, or be? Could be the big three: health, wealth, romance, or any subdivision of any of these. It could be the Lamborghini, whatever it happens to be. Go ahead and select that. Then you want a visual, because the subconscious mind thinks in terms of images.
45:35 You need a visual that represents the Lamborghini or the house or the romance or the money, something that communicates it to it. And then the thing that is gasoline, it’s fuel, electricity, depending on what you’re driving these days, that operates the mind and gets it to go into warp speed, is emotion. The things that we attract are things that we love, we hate, or we fear. We want to focus on love, so now we have an intention, we have a visual, and we want to look at the visual with passion, with love.
46:08 We long for the Lamborghini or the house or the wealth, the job, romance, soulmate, whatever, and then we want to repeat this, because the repeating of the image and the emotion followed by the intention will rewire the subconscious. Now we’ve given it something to do instead of it going around going, well, let’s see, we can break down today. Now it’s going to go around and say, how can I help manifest this today? Right? Reassign the subconscious, give it a new task.
46:40 Right, okay, got it. Well, I got two boys that are young. They’re five and six years old, and if I don’t give them something to do, they will find something to do, and they will go break something, they’ll go build a fort, but if I give them something to construct, that’s the point, then they’ll do it. Like, lately I got them doing push-ups and pull-ups, and they got a chore list, and they really will do something productive if I give them something productive to do.
47:04 So you’re saying do this with your subconscious, and you have to go out of your way and proactively do it with the emotion, with the visual, with the positive emotion, the love, and constantly make sure that it’s got a to-do list of those things. Okay, yes, and, and that’s the way to reprogram it. Plus, that’s not a, that’s not a chore. That should be fun. Yeah, if somebody really wants a Lamborghini, and we’re just using that because you mentioned it, it could be anything, but if somebody wants this particular thing, it should excite them.
47:33 So this, not should, not be a chore to do. This could be sitting down and going, wow, I can’t wait to be driving that car. I can see myself on the road and everybody looking at me, and I’m getting speeding tickets. Leave that part out, but you’re, you’re really enjoying being in this car. There’s the feeling of love, there’s the imagination, everything is being accelerated.
47:53 This is communicating to the subconscious mind, and the more often you do that, the subconscious mind is going to say, oh, this is what we need to create, this is what he wants next, and it will look for the opportunities and lead you to them, and them to you, so that you can actually manifest, attract that car or whatever it was that you were indulging in. Yeah, these techniques are so, so, so very powerful. I would just say if people are listening for the first time or even the tenth time, it’s definitely worth going deep on these things and trying a few of these things out.
48:24 You know, Joe, we got a bunch of them in this book. You got nine different clearing techniques. If we had to pick one or two others? What are, what are ones that you would love to at least talk about, or explain, because there’s a bunch of ones in here, some of them really cool names as well? Yeah, I’m looking at the back cover of my own book, and I’m the tapping is something we talked about before, maybe, uh.
48:47 Yeah, but go ahead. I mean, tell me what you think. Um, we’re nebulizing. I’m a big fan of nebulizing. It’s a word I coined many, many years ago, I think before even The Secret.
48:59 Uh, Neville Goddard was a mystic. I don’t know, we probably talked about him on one of the previous interviews, but it’s, it’s worth bringing up, because he’s so powerful, and his technique is so amazing. Talk about creating miracles and doing it at an accelerated rate. Nebulizing is one way to do it. Neville Goddard was a mystic who died in the 1970s.
49:20 He used to give talks. He wrote a lot of books, most were self-published. He came and went. He did influence lives. I discovered him around the 1990s, and it started to have a big effect on my life.
49:31 It helped me start to create a career as a copywriter, internet marketer, as the internet came around, and I started to get a name for myself on it. I started coming out with spiritual stuff, which got me introduced and invited to be in the movie The Secret. A lot of things were happening, and a lot of it can be credited to my work with what Neville left behind. Nebulizing is my coined name to pay respects to him. Neville went beyond just attraction.
49:59 Neville talked about feeling it real. In fact, I have several books that he had personally signed, and often he would sign them by saying, “Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.” “Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.” What does that mean? Assume that your intention, the thing that you want to have, do, or be, has already been completed.
50:21 What does that feel like? A little moment or two ago, when we were talking about manifesting the car and rewriting, rewiring the subconscious, I said, imagine that you were in the car and you were driving it. That’s nebulizing the goal. That’s pretending you already have the thing you wanted. If you’ve been wanting to attract your soulmate, you would spend a little bit of time, especially at night as you’re about to drift off, because this is going to communicate with your subconscious mind.
50:46 You go into the experience of, you were on a date with your soulmate that day or the night before, and you kind of relive it. You go into the experience of holographically physically owning it as if it was real. See, most people, when they practice mental imagery and visualization, they see themselves in the future, and they see themselves separate from the things they want, and mental imagery and visualization works. Science has already proven that. We know that’s a way to program the mind, but if you want to accelerate your results, not only see it but feel it as if it already happened.
51:26 A lot of people will tell me, especially if they hear what I do, it’s like, oh, can I win the lottery, you know, and they’re going to want to win a whole lot of money, because they just want to, you know, the rags to riches kind of lazy man’s way to do it. Just go buy a ticket, and there you are. You’re rich, and they don’t understand. You have to change your consciousness. You have to change your belief system.
51:45 You have to actually grow into having more money. If it’s just dumped on you, you will probably collapse under it and get rid of it, because you haven’t handled all the beliefs underneath it. What Neville would be encouraging somebody to do is imagine you’re already wealthy. How does it feel? What are you doing?
52:04 Who do you talk to? Who do you write about this? If somebody was trying to get a particular large sale, instead of imagining, well, I got this sale, or affirming, they got the sale, or writing affirmations, I’m going to get this sale, or I got this sale. Instead of doing all of that, Neville would advise you to assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. You already got the sale.
52:30 That was the wish. You already are experiencing the fulfillment of it in this moment. Here’s why this works. Neville probably didn’t even know this, because he was very biblical phrased, and he said that your imagination is actually God. Your imagination is God, and that’s what’s within you, and so whatever you are visualizing and imagining and adding feeling to it, you’re creating, because you are God.
52:55 That’s huge all by itself, but this also works because we’ve been talking about the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between imagination and reality, and you probably proved it when you said you had a dream and you woke up. Well, the dream made you physically respond. Your mind didn’t know that it was a dream. During that process, you were responding, maybe an arousal, or maybe in anger, or maybe in fear, but there was a physiological response to an experience that was actually not real.
53:27 So the mind does not know the difference, and if we can get the image and the feeling into the brain, into the subconscious mind, by nebulizing it and feeling it real as if it already happened, now the mind says, we have to create that, because it’s experiencing it, but it’s not quite seeing it on the outside. It has it now lodged as a new imprint, and is going to go about its business and create emotions and opportunities and choices for you to do things to help manifest it. It will work to make that happen.
54:02 In a way, this is a brain hack. It’s a shortcut to getting your brain to work. The other reason this works is that I am a metaphysical guy. When you are communicating at this level, you are sending your requests not only in your conscious mind and not only to your subconscious slash your unconscious, and even deeper to what you called the collective unconscious, but I believe there’s another level down below that, which I’ve been calling the esoteric internet, which is this quantum field where we’re all connected.
54:31 And when you nebulize that, you already have something. You have actually sent this seed through all those layers of mind into the field that we’re all connected to. That seed goes out and will find the people that will help manifest whatever it is that you have already experienced is real, and nudge them to help you. You will hear from people that are remarkable. It’s like, where’d that come from?
54:57 Or somebody from a long time ago, where somebody knew you’ll run into. That’s where magic will happen. It will be on the mysticism level. So nebulizing is a way to clear yourself with the limiting beliefs by kind of overriding them and flooding them with this feel-it-real experience of already having your intention. Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.
55:23 I can’t believe you just talked about this Neville technique, because I want to tell you a little story that relates right back to it. So about six weeks ago, right here in the studio, sitting across from me was Dr Joe Dispenza, and I asked him about affirmations, and he said, you know what, Brian, I don’t like affirmations, because of this. He’s like, what I want you to do is be exactly what you just described. I want you to, to have that future now. And he said, you know what, Brian, I’m about to do a seven-day retreat at the Excel Center.
55:54 Why don’t you drop by? And I thought, why don’t I drop by? So I did, and I spent about, I didn’t go the whole seven days, but I said I don’t know about five days, and I did one of his walking meditations, and during those, uh, it’s guided. It’s about an hour, hour and 10 minutes, and you kind of stand up, and then walk, and stand up and walk, and you basically execute. At least what I’m getting from it is a version of this Neville technique that you describe, and it’s been supremely powerful.
56:21 And again, Dr Joe saying some of the things you’re saying now is like, experience the future now, experience it now and feel it now. And you know, this is something I’m very guilty of, if I’m honest, and maybe a lot of people listening are, is that I’m, I’m kind of, this, one day I’ll have this, and and then I’ll be happy. One day I’ll have this, and then I’ll, I can get it, and one day I’ll have this, and until then I’m gonna suspend all of my celebrations and I’m going to have this anxiety and anger until I get that.
56:52 And when I, and of course when I do get these things, I never remember to pay myself back for all the feelings, because then it’s on to the next goal. I’m the worst. I’m the worst at this. I’m sure a lot of people listening are. And so I’ve been doing these walking meditations, strangely enough, and I’m clearly tapping into the quantum field, because I manifested you here today as well to reaffirm these things.
57:13 But I’ve been like smiling to myself as I’m doing these walking meditations, because I’m actually experiencing it now, and it’s an incredible feeling to just be like, it already happened, because I could see it, and it already happened. So I’m all celebrating it, because I know I’m gonna have it. It’s gonna happen. The only thing I don’t know is the little details, which will surprise me along the way. What’s the color of the Lamborghini, right?
57:34 What’s the, what’s the rounding error on the net worth, you know? What’s the, what’s the, uh, the name of the plane, whatever it is? And so I, I’ve actually been living this practice, and I’ve been doing these walking meditations pretty much every single morning since. So London sees me walking around, and I’m smiling, and I’m standing, uh, on my own on the side of a road for 20 minutes, and I’ve been doing this, and so I can concur that this Neville technique, again, it’s more of a black belt move, like we said earlier, but it is what I’ve been looking for after I’ve gone through the white belts and the blue belts and the purple belt techniques of doing the affirmations.
58:10 This is it, Joe, and I’m a huge fan of it, and I appreciate that you’re articulating it, because it’s really feeling right for me, and it’s working for me, and, again, one other thing that doctor just said, and I want to go back to you, is he said, look, you, it until you change who you are. You can’t change your reality. So it, it does come back to you and ownership, and you do have to become a different person. And when I’m out there walking, the realization I’m smiling, and I’m thinking, okay, I do need to be someone else.
58:39 I need to be the person that can embrace this, that can bring it in, and maybe I need to be happier in the moment, maybe I need to be X, Y, or Z. But, um, I think it’s a really powerful technique, and I, I’m really glad you put it in the book. I think it’s number eight, and, um, yeah, I think you described it really well. Oh, I’m so glad you brought up Dr Joe, because I’m a big fan of his. One of the honors I had is that we both spoke in Russia and in the Ukraine, uh, together.
59:03 We were on stage, and so I’m a big fan. I love his books, love what he’s doing, and he brings more of the science behind the Neville technique. Neville just kind of spoke from his heart and was a mystic channeling wisdom, but Dr Joe is going to give you the facts and the tests and the experiments and the results. Yeah. Yeah, I know, and it’s great.
59:23 It’s great to have all these different angles of something, and I, I always say, you know, there’s this phrase, it takes a village, and uh, and for any one person, oftentimes they’ll need different people to kind of bring them different concepts to click at different points in their life. So yeah, it’s always great to have these things articulated, and it’s been a powerful technique for me, and I’m, I’m going all in on it. So I’ve been doing these things 20 some days in a row, and, and they’re really working, and, and let me just say one more thing, Joe, is that, you know, I’m the guy that’s super fortunate to be having conversations like this with you, and a lot of people watch a lot of episodes on London Real, and yet we still need to be sometimes reminded that you know, we can go even deeper on the things that we, we think we know.
1:00:09 So yeah, you know, Dr Joe Vitale. Yeah, I’ve had him on the show before, but dear, are you really doing the whole Ho’oponopono? No, you’re not, Brian. So it’s like, even though I’m familiar with these, I’ve just recently embraced, uh, this stuff from Dr Joe, and again, I had Dr Joe on the show five times before, never been to one of his things before, finally did, and I’m finally like slapping myself in the back of the head, like, wow, if anybody in this world should have been aware of these techniques and using them, maybe it should have been me, and I wasn’t, and now I’m going deeper on it.
1:00:40 So I would just say to anybody else who’s watched The Secret, gotten one of your books, even watched you on the show before, they can definitely go deeper on these techniques. Yeah, yeah. Well, we’re talking about different techniques, and we’ve been talking about my book, Your Unlimited Self, so but I’m wondering how spontaneous are you, because I have a new technique that’s not in the book, because I just, I actually just, I just finished writing the web copy for it yesterday, and I’m really excited about this, and this demonstrates a lot of things that I do in my life.
1:01:12 One of them is, I follow inspiration. I’m not looking at data reports. I’m not looking at what people have answered on a survey, because I’m a big believer in what Henry Ford said: if he had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses. you know, they didn’t say they wanted cars or Lamborghini, and I have created a way to go to the past to change the past, and because of that, to go to the future and create the future you want. Can I explain that?
1:01:41 Yeah, let’s do it. All right, well, I’m calling it a mental time travel system, and that’s where I put the website, mental time travel system, and the research that I’ve come across with all of the deep dives I’ve done is that we can’t change the facts of the past, but we can change our perceptions of the past. Now, this ties into everything we’ve been talking about in this episode, because I talked about Ho’oponopono. I talked about Ho’oponopono changing the perceptions, and where are they?
1:02:08 They’re in your subconscious mind. So we want to change our perceptions, and why do we want to change this? Because the limitations we’re living from right now, we created in the past. We didn’t create them today. We might have reinforced them today, but most likely we’ve reinforced them a hundred times or more since first acquiring them.
1:02:30 In the past, so the first level of this mental time travel system is to go to the past, relive and experience that we feel is where we had acquired the limiting belief. But at this point, we relive it separate from being in it, so we’re an observer now. We’re watching the movie. We’re also paying attention to what were the conclusions we made. If somebody was yelling at you as a little kid, you might have concluded, well, I’m not lovable, I’m not likable, people are upset around me, which might be one of the reasons why you’re not in a relationship now.
1:03:05 So what if you can go to the past and write a new story? Go ahead and create a new narrative. Go ahead and create a new belief, the belief being something to the effect of, well, my parents, or whoever we’re fighting, had their own thing going on. It had nothing to do with me. You can bring the awareness of an adult’s consciousness back to the past where you had created the limitation.
1:03:29 Once that is resolved and released, which is very much another clearing technique, you return to the moment, this moment now. You have more power now. You can go into the future to create what you want to have, do, or be, because the limitation that was preventing you from doing that is now gone. So I have created a whole program, this mental time travel system, and using audio, where I narrate it to guide people to the past and guide them to the future.
1:03:59 And I want to say one more thing. I’ve been inspired by you, Brian, in a lot of different ways. I followed you on Instagram, saw the Athletics you were doing, seeing what you’ve been doing for years. Now with this whole program, I started my own TV show online, Zero Limits Living TV, and what’s happening with Zero Limits Living TV is that I am learning, much like you, from the experts I have on the shows. So one of them was Dr Benjamin Hardy, who had written a book called Your Personality isn’t permanent, and that was part of the inspiration and the spark to create this new program that I’m going to be releasing any moment now, because he pointed out whatever you think you are, whatever you think your personality is, it’s not permanent.
1:04:44 It’s composed. You can uncompose it, decompose it, rewrite it, read, create software. I remember reading his book and just being profoundly inspired. And then when I had him on my show, we talked about the future self, which is part of the mental time travel system, because we now go into the future to create the, the version of us that we’ve been longing for, our ideal self. So I’m not stopping when it comes to clearing techniques, and I’m not stopping when it comes to writing more books.
1:05:15 I think I’ve had five more books since I’ve seen you last. Yeah. You’re a prolific writer and musician, but I love this time travel technique. It’s something I thought long and hard about. Um, you know, for me, my personal narrative was parents getting divorced when I was seven, and it kind of put me in this mode of, it was me against the world, and I wouldn’t let anyone in to hurt me ever again, and I, I lived this narrative for a good 30 plus years of my life, and I kind of addressed it in one of my documentary films called Reconnect, that kind of kicked off with an ayahuasca ceremony, but then I had to do the work afterwards, which you always, always have to, of actually trying to figure out how I’m going to use it to do something with.
1:05:54 And I ended up going back home to San Diego, and I actually interviewed both my mom and my dad, and asked him about that experience, and what I learned, Joe, is that I was telling myself a story about what happened that wasn’t, it wasn’t true. What does that mean, true? It was just a story that I repeated over and over again, and again. I’m sure you’ve said this many times, and your technique addresses it. What happened in the past is not what happened in the past.
1:06:21 It’s the story you’re telling yourself. Yes, it probably comfortably fits into your narrative of the world, to make sure that you can continue to be a victim or whatever, and funny enough, when I went back and spoke to my mom and dad with a new perspective of trying to be a little more open, I realized that, you know, what, these were two people trying to have a relationship, which is one of the most complicated things in the world. They had to make a decision.
1:06:45 They had a lot of pain that was going on, and I just happened to be around, and I realized, funny enough, after talking to both of them, that they actually made probably the right decision, and my mom got to go on and take me traveling around the world as a single mother. My dad got to go on and live his life, and it was actually a net positive decision for them, and probably for me too. So now I don’t look at this as some odd, jeez moment. I looked at it now as this, this great thing that happened that allowed me to go on and do all these things with my life.
1:07:15 But, and so I’ve kind of lived maybe a version of what you’re talking about, and it was a beautiful now to see it anyway. So I don’t, I, I really try not to no longer look at it as something that happened to me, more of something that happened maybe for me. So I don’t know if that’s a little bit about what you’re dealing with, but it was, it’s something, it isn’t it, and it’s so beautiful, and I want to add to that, to expand on it, because I think this is relevant.
1:07:40 We all have stories about our past, and I, I know that a lot of people have stories that aren’t serving them, because they’re looking at their past, and they’re saying that past condemned them to be a certain way today. And the reality is, you don’t remember the past accurately. There’s a lot of scientists, including Benjamin Hardy, who have pointed out that when you remember something, you remember it inaccurately to begin with, and then every time you remember it, it changes, it fogs out.
1:08:11 I heard one example. It’s like taking a photo and putting it on a Xerox machine, the old machines that you can go and copy, and then after you make a copy, you take the copy of it and you put it on the machine, then you take the copy of that copy, put it on the machine, and over a very short period of time you almost don’t have anything to look at, because the visual has now changed and it’s almost incomprehensible. I know, I had mentioned about being a musician and how it was so hard in the beginning because I almost gave up.
1:08:38 I was fortunate to be with a studio executive who had heard my story, and said, you keep talking about when you were a kid and your father had given you this really cheap guitar. He said, I think you should go find that guitar, or go talk to your father. My father was alive at the time, so I called him up, and I said, Dad, you remember when I wanted to be a guitar player? And he said, yeah, you were a little kid, you were like seven years old. And I said, you remember the guitar you got for me, which I had complained about for 50 some years?
1:09:07 He said, oh yeah, that cost me three dollars, and I went through a snowstorm and drove to another state, went to go get that damn thing because you wanted to play guitar. And suddenly the whole memory shifted. It was instead of me being the spoiled, unhappy, complaining little kid who didn’t get what he wanted, my father did an act of heroism. He drove through a snowstorm, and he was struggling, he didn’t have money, three dollars, whatever that was, 1960.
1:09:37 You know, that was a lot of money, and he went to go buy this Roy Rogers cardboard guitar, because he was doing his best to help me express my music. And when I heard the story, it was like everything changed, everything opened, and now I could be a musician, because the luggage and the disdain and the complaints and that smudge on my past was gone. I was fortunate to be able to talk to my father about it at the time, but all of us have to look at the stories we’re telling ourselves and say, first of all, may not even be accurate.
1:10:08 Maybe we can check it out, and then, second of all, is that story serving you? Is that story helping you? I remember Leo Buscaglia, who wrote the book on love, very powerful speaker, he’s gone now, and he was all over PBS TV and gave lectures here and there, and he always talked about how happy his childhood was. He grew up in the Depression, and his parents always got food for him, and I think it was Time magazine interviewed his brother, and his brother said, I don’t know what he’s talking about.
1:10:38 It wasn’t like that at all. He said, we starved, we were broke, we were unhappy. Two people in the very same house, same experience, blood relatives, one’s telling a story of happiness, the other is telling a story of despair. You always have a choice. Yeah, it’s so well said, so well said.
1:10:58 I, I’ve even heard that you actually don’t have memories in your brain. What you do is, in the present moment, you recreate that story that seems to serve the present moment, and it’s not like, wow, it’s not like a hard drive, you know? What we’re so used to, the computer is the analogy to us. It’s not like you go back and check the file from five years ago with an exact timestamp that has the data. No, you actually go back and really recreate the memory in real time, to probably serve whatever situation that you’re probably recalling it for, and it changes a little each time, to where you’re right, you can actually go back, and sometimes you’ll meet an old friend and say, remember when this happened, and they’ll be like, no, that’s not exactly what happened, and sometimes you’ll go check a picture or a source, and you’ll realize that it actually is, it’s not at all what happened, or it’s a perception thing.
1:11:47 And so if people can realize that their own brains are fooling them, then yeah, you can rewrite your stories. And how many stories aren’t serving you right now? If someone’s listening or watching, my, how many stories from the past, like you said, might have blocked you from an incredible musical career, which you’ve had, all because of this silly little story that, again, was a reflection of your subconscious just holding you back a bit? And people are walking around with tens or hundreds of those little stories that they won’t maybe ever realize that they have, or maybe not until it’s too late.
1:12:18 You know, it’s, well, I hope today is the reminder for people that they have a whole lot of choice: choice about what they’re thinking, uh, knowledge that they’re not their thoughts, a choice about the affirmations, and also realizing that when they first start the affirmations, there’s a sense of discomfort, because they’re budding against the existing programming, the previous affirmations. I hope they realize that they can reprogram their mind, the reticular activating system, choose what do you want to have, do, or be, Lamborghini, house, whatever it happens to be, and start to, uh, feel it real, using nebulizing as the experience, visual, have a visual representation for it, so you can tell the brain, look at it with love, which is one of the powerful ways to add fuel to the, the acceleration of what you want, and doing that repeatedly.
1:13:04 All of these things, including looking at what we’re telling ourselves about our stories from the past. I I did find, uh, I don’t know if it was 10 years ago or what, but I ran into a woman I had graduated with from high school in 1972. And so I was curious, and so I just kind of probed. I said, what do you remember about me from 1972? And she said, you know, I don’t think I ever heard you say a word ever.
1:13:33 And I thought, I thought I talked to people. I thought I talked to her. I know I had friends, and so it, we could look at our past and question it and go, well, maybe it exactly wasn’t that way. I know it feels like it was. Maybe it wasn’t.
1:13:47 Maybe we can go and confirm or get the facts right, like a good detective, or maybe we just throw it all out and go, how do I want to write it? What’s the new perception? Using kind of the mental time travel system I’ve been referring to, and go back in time and just kind of rewrite the whole story, since we don’t have it accurate anyway. Just go ahead and run a new one. Pretend you’re Harry Potter, and you can just have to be anything.
1:14:11 It’s a magical world. Yeah, it’s a great exercise. If you know, if you could just go ahead and rewrite your own history, what would it be? Try it, and then think, well, guess what, you can, you know, that’s really the way you can do it, and you can look at every negative experience as a positive experience. Just how you’re framing that, the way you can, your present day.
1:14:29 I want to ask you a couple final questions. Um, you know, you talk a lot about not being a victim and not playing a victim and just being aware of that status. You know, Joe, when I grew up, I’m about to say, when you and I grew up, I’m a little younger than you, not how much. I think is that, you know, there wasn’t the Twitter, there wasn’t the social media, and I don’t remember people glorifying the victims. I remember people glorifying the heroes.
1:14:52 These days, when I go to the social media platform, sometimes it feels like it’s become a place that glorifies the victim, and I’m wondering, is that a tech issue, is that a culture issue, and how do you address it, and how do you even recommend that people maybe deal with technology, uh, because maybe sometimes it can magnify some of these feelings? What a great question, and what a great insight. I got chills thinking about it, because you know, I think you’re correct.
1:15:22 We were just talking about how erroneous memory can be, so maybe we’re both remembering this wrong, but I would agree with you. As I was growing up, it really felt like we focused on the heroes. We focused on the people that were doing great things. I was named after Joe DiMaggio. My father had met Joe DiMaggio, and I remember one of the biographies, it was titled The Last Great Hero, or The Last American Hero, and so there was a focus on the ones who were really standing out, the focus on the Green Berets that were standing out during the Vietnam War, and things like that.
1:16:00 I don’t remember there being a big focus on victims. I do think social media has changed that. I do think that social media focuses on the negative, the doom and gloom, the victimhood, and reinforces it, because the brain is attracted to what the love, hate, or fear. Hate and fear is being broadcast all over social media. I heard Steve Harvey the comedian once say that social media is the Devil’s Playground, and I remember thinking, oh, I understand where he’s coming from, but I think he’s accurate.
1:16:33 I think the shadow side of people is being expressed there on social media, so the focus is on weakness, darkness, gloom, victimhood. So what do we do about this? Well, the first thing is to become aware of it. Second thing is don’t participate in it. I said for the longest time, turn off the mainstream news.
1:16:57 You know, when COVID came around, a pandemic came around, I was like, okay, we gotta look at the news a little bit to find out if we can go out that day, but for the most part, go on a media diet. You’ll look for a few minutes to find out, okay, is my city okay, can I go out today? Outside of that, focus on what you’re going to have, what you’re going to do, what you’re going to be. Focus on what you’re going to create. Focus on what you’re going to contribute.
1:17:20 Focus on what you’re going to give to the world. Focus on how you’re going to make a difference in the world, rather than going with the doom and gloom crowd. And there’s a lot of them out there, but the thing is this, is something Leo Buscaglia said. Leo Buscaglia said there were more good people doing good things than there were negative people doing negative things. He said the difference is the negative people are running around and shouting.
1:17:47 They’re the ones drawing attention, and so we look and we go, there’s more of them. There isn’t more of them. The ones doing good are typically quiet, and maybe what we need to do, like you’re doing here with your show, and I guess me now with the show I’m doing, is to, uh, be a little louder. We need to point out there are good people doing good things in the world. There have been a couple new services.
1:18:12 There’s one called Nice News that I subscribe to. Nice News, what it does is find nice news, people doing good things, the heroes, the positive, and they broadcast it on their website. They send out an email every day. I look forward to it. I’m always surprised, like, that was going on?
1:18:29 I didn’t know that. So I think we need to be aware and not participate, and maybe contribute in a more of a white light oriented way. Yeah, and just one other thing you were saying earlier about the positive affirmations. You know, we’re constantly bombarding ourselves with negative affirmations, and we just don’t know it, right? And so when you start the positive affirmations, you’re like, wait a second, it feels weird.
1:18:53 One thing social media does is it constantly, it can bombard you with negative affirmations too, because depending on the frame of mood you are now, back in your mind day, it was maybe hard to find someone who was maybe our age and in our occupation that was, you know, better than us, had the Lamborghini, had the girlfriend. These days, on Instagram, you could always find someone that, uh, is better looking, you, has a better girlfriend than you, has a better car than you, has a better job than you, is making more money than you. Literally, it’s on tap, and it’s fed to you through an algo.
1:19:25 So if you’re not careful, you’re constantly being parted with these negative affirmations. Whereas when you and I were growing up, we might go see a movie, or maybe every now and then you see a ball game, but it wasn’t like constantly bombarded, and maybe people that look like you acted like you, etc. So again, like you said, turn it off. You know, it can be used as a tool, but for a lot of times it’s subconsciously giving you negative affirmations all the time, and unless you can consciously reframe that and say, wow, that’s really good, that motivates me, you’re being bombarded on a constant level with things that could, can maybe get you down.
1:20:02 So I guess maybe on that same note, you just have to consume it carefully, or, like you said, diet, just tune it way down or off. Yeah, I think what you just pointed out is another great observation. I have two tips there that I practice myself. The first one is to be aware of the demon of comparison, because as soon as you compare yourself to somebody that’s in your field, or in some way, shape, or form in your standing, and they’re doing better than you, boy, you can collapse your ego, you can collapse your self-worth, you can collapse your self-confidence, you can crawl into a hole and just figure, what’s, they’re all better.
1:20:39 Um, you mentioned I’ve written 82 books or so forth. Sounds pretty impressive until you look around. Bob Blye, who was one of the ones who influenced me, has written a hundred, in some books. The person who influenced him was Isaac Asimov, who wrote, I think, 450 books, and if I sat here and looked at, oh my god, I’ve only written 82, I can feel like a loser. I can feel like, oh my God, I gotta buck up, I better start writing some more books.
1:21:02 I mean, look what Bob is, and Isaac, and all these other people are doing. So the very first thing is to watch the comparison. If you can use what they’re doing, as you pointed out, for inspiration, that’s fantastic, but to use it to create a sense of desperation or a sense of failure, no, that’s, that’s not positive. That’s not going to help you grow. So I say be aware of comparison.
1:21:24 The other thing is the young, really, race that we should have going, and you will know this from Athletics and martial arts, is exceeding your personal best. When I was jogging, and it was decades ago, and I was running and everything, the phrase exceed your personal best was everywhere, and I kept thinking that is so brilliant, because I can’t be the fastest person, and even if I was in a race, I’m not probably going to be the fastest person in that race. That was my thinking back then, but if I just exceeded my personal best, if I did a certain time last week and this week I wanted better than that time, that’s the measurement, that’s the stick.
1:22:03 So instead of looking at, again, comparison, just looking at how am I doing, and how am I doing in terms of growing, am I exceeding my personal best? I, I think those two tips can help people feel a lot more relaxed. Yeah, no, definitely. So if you’re going to consume it, use it for those reasons, and then again, you can always also use that as a little bit of a reflection on self. So if you’re seeing something that’s bothering you, it may be a good time to meditate on that and say, well, why is that triggering me?
1:22:33 What do I want? What do I need? What, you know, etc. Um, right. So I’m curious for you, what are you doing in the next five years?
1:22:41 Like, what are some of the goals on your mind? I mean, first of all, you look great. You always look great, right? And you’re in your 70s. I’m, I’m going that direction.
1:22:50 Okay, and so for you, is it more creation? Is it more music? Is it more books? Is it more of your, your show? What are always the things on your mind, or do you plan ahead?
1:23:04 I don’t really plan ahead. I, I don’t do the five-year plan, three-year plan, two-year plan, not even really the one-year plan. I am doing my best from a spiritual standpoint to be in the moment and to follow my guidance and my inspiration. I have, as I mentioned, I have like four books that have come out since the last time I’ve talked to you, I think, and then we’ve focused on Your Unlimited Self, the most recent book. I have 15 other books in the works.
1:23:30 I have two books that are done. I have another book called Unexpected Kindness that is going to be coming out in just a few months. I have a movie called Zero Limits about the whole thing I was talking about with Ho’oponopono that will be coming out next year. I am excited about my TV show, mostly because I am learning much like you. I’m sitting at the feet of these gurus, of these authorities, of these speakers, and very often I think I know what they’re going to say, and then I’ll learn something.
1:23:58 I was so off the mark that the process of discovery is enriching me. And then, as I mentioned, with the mental time travel system, which is mentaltimetravelsystem.com, that hit me like a lightning strike, a mind in my own business, and then the Divine, if you will, my unconscious mind, I don’t know where it came from, hits me with this lightning strike of an idea, and the next thing you know I’m obsessed. I’m obsessed with time travel. I’m reading biographies of H.G.
1:24:26 Wells. I reread The Time Machine. I re-watched the movie The Time Machine from 1960. I start playing with possibilities. I start thinking in terms of clearings, then I added together with what I’m doing on the TV show, next thing you know I’m thinking, oh, there’s a way to change the past and create the future using this kind of mental time travel system.
1:24:45 All of this excites me at the same time. I’m sitting here, you know, I have big dreams. I because I just finished a divorce, which I was going through over three years, which was a hellish, nightmarish, agonizing experience. I bought this house that Lisa and I are in, but we’re both kind of eyeing, we don’t want to be in Texas anymore. We like to be in a cooler climate, but where we can almost be anywhere on the planet as long as they have internet and Amazon delivery, we’d probably be happy.
1:25:12 So I’m looking at all that as the pandemic lifts and we feel more comfortable traveling. I haven’t traveled in three years. I’ll start going back on the road, doing workshops and all of that. I would love to get my band together, create more music. Lisa, my partner, Lisa Winston was a vocalist for 40 years, and we both want to get in the studio and do some things together, and then I can probably go on, but I just want to enjoy my life, be happy, be healthy, make a difference, inspire people while I live from inspiration myself.
1:25:44 And why buy the Lambo? What was that all about? It was so beautiful. It was an unusual purple. It was, this is where I’m at.
1:25:56 When I was homeless, I didn’t know what a Lamborghini was. I didn’t know what a bet, it was. It was like I didn’t have a car at all. I didn’t have a bicycle, so none of that made sense to me. Today, talk about problems, and everything.
1:26:08 I’ve been driving Bentleys for 10 years. I got a little bored, and I looked, and there was this purple Lambo, Urus, their version of an SUV, and that purple just said, come and get me, Joe, come and get me, and I did. Are you happy with it? I’m very happy with it. It’s a monster, 700 and some horsepower.
1:26:31 I added titanium mufflers to it, so when I started up here you can hear it. There sounds like a very Texan thing to have. That’s fantastic. Uh, well, that’s great. I love it.
1:26:45 You know, uh, I love the fact that you’re enjoying life. You’re buying Lambos, you’re writing books, you’re making music, and it always feels like you’re just getting warmed up, Joe. And, uh, yeah, I always really enjoy your energy and the time we spend together, and so, you know, thank you, thank you so much for this. Thank you for continuing to create. What’s the best way for people to get the latest book and then find out about more stuff coming on?
1:27:08 What’s the best way? Uh, all my books are on Amazon. I wrote Your Unlimited Self is the one we’ve been talking about, but I also came out with Karmic Marketing, which is my secret to my empire. Hypnotic Selling Secrets also came out. The Abundance Paradigm.
1:27:22 They’re all on Amazon. You can go to Amazon and have a shopping spree by searching for Joe Vitale and buying whatever shows up. Uh, my music’s on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon. It’s all over there, just signing or typing in my name. I’m active on Instagram, social media.
1:27:40 I’m Dr Joe Vitale, Dr Joe Vitale. The new program I just mentioned is at mentaltimetravelsystem.com, mentaltimetravelsystem.com, and I guess an easy thing to do if they just want a portal is go to mrfire.com, M-R-F-I-R-E, Mr Fire, my nickname, mrfire.com, and that has everything. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, no, it’s my pleasure.
1:28:06 And again, I think the final lesson for everybody here is that, like you said, look how prolific you are, and there’s people out there that are, you know, terrified to record a track, which I will be doing, by the way. Um, you know, start a book, start a show, all that. And then it’s just like, maybe, you know, use, you know, Joe as an example, like, you’ve gone through 80 of these plus, and so, and again, and you’re still going to create. And sometimes you look and think, well, what have I been doing?
1:28:34 You know, I’ve been lazy. And so it’s, it’s a great inspiration for anybody out there who wants to do one of these things. And if you haven’t done it and you want to do it, maybe it’s time to sit down and reflect on, like you said, those stories of the past, do some Ho’oponopono, and say, what’s blocking me from doing this? Because clearly something is, if I’m thinking about it and I want to do it and I haven’t done it, there’s something there, and it’s so much easier to remove that block than to, you know, keep revisiting it or try to find some hack around it.
1:29:07 And one of the best things I think you said today, Joe, which is great, which is not always what people teach, is that there doesn’t have to be some scary demon in that you uncover that’s going to be some super traumatic experience. It might just be like, oh, my dad actually traveled really far just to get that guitar, and it’s actually a beautiful memory that also unlocked, it reconnected you with your dad. It’s just like a win-win-win, and I bet a lot of people are sleeping on those things in their past, if they just took a look, you know?
1:29:39 So yeah, very beautiful. I’m very honored to be here three times. I can’t believe it. Uh, it’s always great to talk to you. The most curious questions you make me think, you make me dance a little bit on my feet, but we always come up with some great stuff, so thank you very much.
1:29:54 Yeah, no, fantastic episode. I got a bunch of people, and, but a bunch of people actually in the crypto space we’ve been talking to for about a year that actually quite a lot have a lot of the secret and Law of Attraction mentality that I told them to watch today, and I, I, you know, first 15 minutes, I know that they’re like on the edge of their seat. Thank you, great stuff, Joe. Uh, next time let’s do it in London when you’re here, and uh, looking forward to it.
1:30:14 We’ll do many more of these. Follow this man, and we appreciate you, Joe, and we’ll see everybody next time on London Real. All right, take care. Thank you.
