Dylan Werner is an American yoga teacher and author, and a former US Marine Corps aircraft firefighter and paramedic. He is known for a strength-based style of yoga, teaches workshops around the world, and wrote The Illuminated Breath, a book on breathwork.
Brian Rose has interviewed Werner twice on London Real, in 2019 and 2022. They talked about his route from the Marines, a tour of Iraq and frontline emergency work to yoga, the mind-body connection he found in extreme sports, why movement matters, and the science and practice of yogic breathing.
Both interviews are listed below with a short summary.
The Illuminated Breath (November 2022). Practical and grounded in his book: how breathing techniques can change how you feel and perform. For his life story, watch How A Marine Firefighter Became a World Renowned Yogi (2019).
Short clip: Success Secrets (2019).
Werner joined the US Marine Corps at 18, served as an aircraft firefighter including a tour of Iraq, then worked as a paramedic and firefighter in California. He found yoga through martial arts, at a time when that work was taking a physical and mental toll.
Speaking in 2019, he said the same connection between mind and body runs through every extreme sport he has done, and that yoga is a way of training it deliberately.
In 2022 he discussed The Illuminated Breath, which combines yogic breath control, or pranayama, with modern physiology. He presents specific breathing sequences for performance, recovery, sleep, focus and anxiety.
Werner is known for a strong, athletic style of yoga built on arm balances and control. He believes anyone, young or old, can benefit from the practice.
