Six Time Mr Olympia

“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”

In short: Dorian Yates is a bodybuilding legend who returned to the London Real studio to talk with Brian Rose about the spiritual side of training and how mindset shapes his approach to life. In this Success Secrets clip, he describes silence in the gym, living like a monk for 12 years and building progress one brick at a time.

Dorian explains that when he was pushing and lifting, everything went silent. He enjoyed the challenge but admits he was not a fun person to be around, since even on a shopping trip with his wife he would be thinking about his next workout.

He talks about the hunger of dieting, the sacrifices of a 12-year competing career, and the idea that every perfect session adds a brick to your wall.

Key takeaways

  • Training has a spiritual side. Dorian says that in the middle of a hard lift he heard only silence.
  • It is all-consuming. He says bodybuilding is not just the gym but stays with you all the time.
  • Twelve years like a monk. He lived a strict routine while competing, including being in bed at 11.30 every night.
  • Discipline built belief. He felt indestructible because he believed nobody else was training as he was.
  • Bricks on the wall. Each session with perfect training and eating was a brick, and over time he pulled ahead of rivals who slipped.

Silence, hunger and discipline

Dorian says there is a spiritual side to training and its disciplines. In the middle of a heavy set he could only hear silence. He describes training as hard but fun, apart from the constant hunger when dieting, when every survival instinct tells you to eat.

Living like a monk

For the 12 years he was competing, Dorian says he lived like a monk. He admits he could have got away with less, such as not going to bed at 11.30 every night, but he would have felt he was slacking. That perfect routine, he says, made him feel indestructible.

The bricks on the wall

Dorian describes thinking of each good gym session as laying a brick on his wall. Rivals in California might break their diet or have a bad day and miss a brick, while he kept laying his. Progress, he says, is about the long run: not one day or one workout, but a marathon rather than a sprint.

0:03 Dorian Yates: There’s an athlete you do learn. There’s a spiritual side to the training and to the to the disciplines. Sometimes, you know, you’re pushing and you’re lifting and I Can only hear silence, you know, everything goes I Enjoyed the challenge, but I was not a fun guy to be around. I wasn’t laughing and smiling a lot I was just like, you know, I might be out shopping with a wife or whatever. She could drag me out But I’ll be thinking about someone with work out.

0:37 Brian Rose: Yeah, because training’s fun, right? You know, it’s hard work, right? It’s hard in the gym, you know, you gotta push yourself and it’s hard, but it’s fun.

0:48 Dorian Yates: Well, it’s not fun when you’re starving all day long. All the survival instincts, all the bells are ringing.

0:56 Gotta eat, gotta eat. Nope, I’m gonna eat. 12 years I was competing was living like a monk. That’s the thing with bodybuilding, it’s not just the training when you go to the gym and then you feel like, oh, I forgot about that when you go home. it’s with you all the time, you know?

1:15 I could’ve got away with less. I could’ve got away with not going to bed at 11.30 every night, probably would’ve made that much difference, but it would’ve made it to me. I would’ve felt like I was sacking off here or something.

1:28 Brian Rose: And then you might not have felt much more.

1:30 Dorian Yates: Yeah, and then your mental condition is not the same, you know, I felt indestructible because I thought, no one’s doing this.

1:37 And if you do perfect training and eating and everything, maybe that’s one brick on your wall. So I used to think every time I’d go to the gym putting a brick on my wall. Maybe those guys in California that are competing, maybe he broke his diet today. Maybe he had a bad day and it effectively worked out and didn’t put his brick on that wall. Yeah, so each time he didn’t put that brick, I still was putting the bricks. I mean, slowly and slowly I’m getting more ahead. It’s not about, you know, one day or one workout, right? It’s about the, it’s about the long run. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.
