Dennis McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist and author who has researched psychedelic plants such as ayahuasca and psilocybin mushrooms for more than four decades. He is the younger brother of the late Terence McKenna, and wrote about their life together in The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss.

McKenna regards ayahuasca, psilocybin mushrooms and other plant medicines not simply as drugs but as teachers, and has studied their chemistry and traditional use for more than four decades.
In 2015 he spoke openly about his brother Terence McKenna: their partnership, with Terence as the speaker and Dennis as the researcher, their disagreements, and the experiments at La Chorrera in the Colombian Amazon in 1971.
Speaking in 2020, he argued that plant medicines could help people reconnect with nature and that such a shift in consciousness is needed to face problems such as climate change.
McKenna stresses responsible use and respect for the indigenous traditions that have used these plants for centuries, including the Shipibo healers of the Amazon.
