Ben Armstrong is a crypto YouTuber and author best known as BitBoy Crypto, the name under which he built one of the largest cryptocurrency audiences on YouTube. He bought his first Bitcoin around 2012, lost money in the early days, including in the Mt. Gox collapse, and went on to make videos aimed at helping newcomers avoid the same mistakes. He is the author of Catching Up to Crypto: Your Guide to Bitcoin and the New Digital Economy.
Brian Rose interviewed Armstrong four times on London Real, between June 2021 and December 2022. They covered DeFi and why he compared it to Bitcoin in 2012, how to take profits in a bull market and survive a bear market, the four-year Bitcoin cycle, the Ethereum Merge, and the collapse of FTX.
Each interview is listed below in order with a short summary.
How to Survive the Crypto Crash (2022). The fullest version of his market view: the four-year cycle, the Ethereum Merge and how to handle a bear market. For his own story, from early Bitcoin losses to YouTube, watch Is DeFi Now Unstoppable? (2021).
Speaking in June 2021, Armstrong argued that getting into decentralised finance was like buying Bitcoin around 2012. He said DeFi could do much of what early Bitcoin supporters hoped Bitcoin would do, and that this worried the banks.
In September 2021 he said that holding coins forever, whatever happens, is a lazy strategy. His advice was to zoom out, plan exits in a bull market and keep the discipline to take profits.
In 2022 Armstrong argued that the market was following the same four-year cycle seen before, and said Bitcoin has typically bottomed around the US midterm elections. He presented bear markets as the time when the real money is made.
Speaking in September 2022, he called Ethereum’s move from proof of work to proof of stake the biggest event in crypto history and said it would change the industry.
Across his interviews he warned newcomers that many projects are good but many people in crypto are not. He stressed doing your own research and understanding who actually holds your coins.
