I’m delighted to welcome back today’s guest who has consistently warned against the escalation of war with Russia, and the potentially catastrophic consequences of continued military aid to Ukraine and Israel.
Colonel Douglas Macgregor is a decorated combat veteran, retired US Army Colonel, author and foreign policy expert who is widely recognised for his leadership in the Battle of 73 Easting during the Gulf War – the US Army’s largest tank battle since World War II.
Right now he is deeply concerned by the reckless actions of those in Washington, and it is not just the threat of a global conflict, but the continued breakdown of society in the West, the destruction of national identity and the social cohesion that supports it.
Colonel Macgregor’s distinguished career began in 1976 when he was commissioned into the Regular Army after completing his studies at the Virginia Military Institute and West Point. During his 28 years of service, he held numerous leadership positions, while his innovative thinking on military transformation and force design have had a profound impact on the global stage, influencing policies in Israel, Russia, and China.
As an author, his groundbreaking ideas have resulted in five books, including Breaking The Phalanx and Transformation Under Fire, and seen him feature as a regular commentator on defence and foreign policy issues on various media platforms including CNN, the BBC, Sky and Fox News, most notably as the go-to guy on Tucker Carlson’s now-defunct show.
In late 2020, Colonel Macgregor was appointed Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defence by then-President Donald Trump, a position he held until the end of the Trump administration, while he has also served as an expert witness before the Senate and House Armed Services Committees.
Colonel Macgregor believes that the conflict between Russia and NATO, particularly the US, is escalating to dangerous levels, with Washington’s actions pushing the world closer to a full-scale war.
He argues that President Putin has made it clear that any strikes on Russian territory using long-range weapons supplied by the US to Ukraine would be considered an act of war. While the US and UK’s intelligence agencies are the main drivers at this point, providing the Ukrainian forces with critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support.
Without this, Macgregor claims, Ukraine would not be able to continue its fight. He is deeply concerned that Washington’s policies, combined with poor advice from NATO military leadership, are leading to a dangerous point where Russia could respond with hypersonic missile strikes on European and US military targets, especially those in NATO countries.
Macgregor warns that these hypersonic missiles, travelling at speeds between 4,500 and 7,600 miles per hour, are virtually impossible to defend against with our current capabilities, while also pointing out that US efforts to isolate Russia economically have backfired, as key global powers like India, Brazil, South Africa, and Turkey are strengthening their ties with Russia and China instead.
The question is – will Washington recognise the seriousness of the situation as the consequences could be catastrophic for both the US and Europe?
“Washington’s reckless actions in Ukraine and Washington’s unconditional support for Israel’s ruthless war of annihilation against Gaza, and increasingly Hezbollah, is doing irreparable damage to American interests and threatens to provoke a much wider war with nuclear-armed powers.”
Douglas describes Ukraine as being on life support with over 600,000 dead soldiers, the kind of numbers not seen since the first world war and if it weren’t for the US and UK intelligence networks, technicians, officers and military advisers on the ground things could be much, much worse.
“I don’t know that there will be much of Ukraine left when this is over. Everybody seems to think that millions upon millions of Ukrainians will return home from abroad, I don’t think so. This is a catastrophe!”
As the Biden administration commits more resources, alongside continued support for Israel, US munitions are dwindling fast.
“The problem is how long can we keep all the ships at sea? People seem to think that aircraft carrier battle groups are self-contained entities that can sail around for months at a time – that’s not true. They have to be routinely provisioned with food, fuel, repair parts, everything that you can imagine and I think the timing is very, very acute right now.”
Colonel Macgregor is a no-nonsense character who shoots straight from the hip, a military leader more at home on the battlefield than anywhere else and it is that insight that makes him a necessary voice when it comes to the realities of war and the nuances at play.
These are challenging times and let’s not kid ourselves, things are likely to get much worse before they get better. There’s seemingly a heightened risk of miscalculation and escalation right now and in this uncertain landscape I’m thankful to have the likes of Colonel Douglas Macgregor to turn to for the inside track on what’s really happening.
