Born in 1944 in Brooklyn, New York, Rudolph William Louis Giuliani was raised in a working-class family, attending Manhattan College before graduating from New York University School of Law in 1968. Starting his legal career as a clerk for Judge Lloyd MacMahon before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, his early career was marked by a strong emphasis on fighting organised crime, a theme that would recur throughout his career.
From there, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, gaining a reputation as a fierce prosecutor and taking on high-profile cases against the Mafia which gained him national attention.
His political career commenced in 1994 when Rudy Giuliani was elected Mayor of New York City, implementing a series of transformative policies such as his “broken windows” policing strategy, which helped transform the city.
Giuliani’s leadership during the 9/11 terrorist attacks is considered by many to be his defining moment, with his calm and decisive response earning him widespread acclaim and the moniker “America’s Mayor.” Giuliani’s presence at Ground Zero, his efforts to coordinate emergency responses, and his ability to rally the city’s morale were seen as emblematic of resilience and leadership during a crisis. In recognition of his efforts, he was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2001.
Since then, he is perhaps best known for his affiliation with Donald Trump both as a campaign advisor and later as personal lawyer.
