Richard Muirhead - Why Web 3.0 Matters and How Europe is Catching Up In the Blockchain Sector

Co-Founder of Fabric Ventures

Today’s London Real guest, Richard Muirhead, is one of the most important voices in the world of blockchain technology investment, venture capitalism and innovation.

An entrepreneur,  decentralised finance evangelist, speaker and the co-founder of Fabric Ventures, Richard focusses on working with, advising and encouraging early-stage blockchain firms in order to contribute to the generation-defining shift towards an Open Economy.

With a particular interest in Web 3.0 and how user-owned content will power the next digital era, Richard was an early investor in Bitcoin and has worked on many of the deals that have come to define the nascent evolution of the cryptocurrency space, including advising Pantera Capital to secure the third largest deal in the blockchain sector.

Those of you who have followed our journey in recent months know only too well the incredible opportunity that Decentralised Finance, or DeFi, represents. An opportunity to readjust, rethink and reimagine the financial structures, systems and processes that support our global economy.

It is a truly transformative time in human history, one which marks a technological shift into an age of information that will allow people to take control of their finances, their future and their freedom for the first time.

DeFi is already revolutionising the concept of finance for millions of people, and has the potential to give financial freedom to billions of ordinary citizens across the planet.

This process will create what I am calling The Greatest Dislocation of Wealth in Human History, leading to countless chances to create huge financial gains through innovative and value-added Decentralised Financial services, whilst simultaneously ensuring that those who are deprived of access to financial services finally get the opportunity they deserve.

This is why my team and I are going “all in” on this technology and infrastructure and plan on spending the next 10 years teaching, understanding, broadcasting, educating, investing in, profiting from and transforming this exciting new marketplace.

I’m delighted that Richard Muirhead is able to join us on the show and I can’t wait to discuss some of the broader topics and themes that are challenging our long-held beliefs. Richard is a Cambridge alumnus, graduating with an MA in Engineering. His whole working life has centred around technology and advancement and he has advised and invested in many groundbreaking projects.

Fabric Ventures, under Richard’s stewardship, have backed major platforms and technologies including Polkadot, Ocean Protocol, Blockstack, Messari, Orchid and a whole host of other projects including gaming platforms and NFT innovators.

In July this year, it was announced that Fabric Ventures had closed a $130 million war chest for investing in early-stage blockchain firms. Part of that came from the European Investment Fund (EIF). which is significant because it is the first time a strand of the European Commission has invested in a fund which concentrates on digital assets.

In what promises to be a fascinating conversation, I am looking forward to discussing the possibilities afforded by an open, decentralised economy, what we can come to expect from Web 3.0 and what technologies for the future are already exciting someone with a proven track record in being part of the financial solutions of the 21st Century.
