This short bonus clip is from Reconnect, the London Real documentary that follows Brian Rose to Costa Rica for three ayahuasca ceremonies with Dennis McKenna. It focuses on one of the film’s central ideas: that ayahuasca carries a message about our broken relationship with nature.
After a dark ceremony of his own, Dennis tells the group: “We are in a planetary crisis.” Biologists used to see evolution as pure competition, he explains, but now understand that it is much more about collaboration and symbiosis. He sees ayahuasca and the other sacred plants as ambassadors for the whole community of living species, and their message is simple: wake up.
Brian’s second ceremony leaves him feeling like one part of a much larger organism. “Humans cannot be healthy in a world that’s dying,” he says. What we do to others, we ultimately do to ourselves. Dennis adds that plants are the ones running nature, and that the way they manage their relationships with their environment is a kind of intelligence. Before Brian leaves, Dennis takes him to a cloud forest, a perfect example of balance and symbiosis.
