Preet Bharara - Doing Justice As The Sheriff of Wall Street

Preet Bharara is an American lawyer, author and broadcaster, who was famously fired by President Trump and banned by President Putin. During his eight year tenure as the United States Attorney for New York, he earned the title “Sheriff of Wall Street” for high-level prosecutions of hedge funds, as well as mafia bosses and terrorists. His career inspired the hit TV show Billions, and Time magazine recognised him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. His new book “Doing Justice” reflects on his time in office.

In this must-see interview, Preet and London Real host Brian Rose discuss the influence of company culture and ethics of personal wealth creation, why “sometimes greed is not good” and why we all judge, or are judged on a  daily basis.

Born on October 13, 1968 in Punjab, India, Preetinder Singh Bharara immigrated to the United States with his family at a young age. Growing up in New Jersey, Bharara developed an early appreciation for the principles of justice and the importance of public service. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and later received his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School, laying the foundation for a distinguished legal career.

Preet’s career as a federal prosecutor began when he joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in 2000. Known for its high-profile cases, the Southern District became the crucible where Bharara honed his prosecutorial skills. His tenacity and commitment to justice were evident as he tackled complex cases involving financial fraud, public corruption, and organised crime.

Bharara gained widespread recognition for his role in prosecuting several high-profile cases that sent shockwaves through the financial world. Notably, his office successfully pursued insider trading cases against prominent figures, demonstrating an unyielding commitment to rooting out financial misconduct and upholding the integrity of the markets.

As the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District, Bharara prioritised cases involving public corruption, earning a reputation as a relentless advocate for government accountability. His office pursued cases against corrupt politicians and officials, regardless of their political affiliations, showcasing a commitment to impartiality and justice.

Under Bharara’s leadership, the Southern District became a leading force in combating cybercrime. His office played a crucial role in dismantling international cybercriminal networks, addressing threats ranging from hacking to identity theft. Bharara’s proactive stance on emerging legal challenges in the digital age highlighted his adaptability and forward-thinking approach.

After leaving public office, Preet Bharara has continued his engagement with the public through various platforms. He authored the bestselling book “Doing Justice: A Prosecutor’s Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law,” offering insights into his prosecutorial philosophy and reflections on the justice system. Bharara also hosts the popular podcast “Stay Tuned with Preet,” where he engages in thoughtful discussions with legal experts, policymakers, and public figures.

Beyond his legal career, Preet Bharara has emerged as a vocal advocate for justice, the rule of law, and democratic values. He frequently contributes to public discourse on legal issues, providing analysis on current events and legal developments. Bharara’s principled stance on defending democratic institutions and the importance of an independent judiciary has solidified his reputation as a stalwart defender of the legal system.

Preet Bharara’s career embodies the ideals of justice, integrity, and public service. From his early days as a federal prosecutor to his advocacy for the rule of law in the public arena, Bharara’s impact on the legal landscape has been profound. His legacy as a principled and fearless advocate for justice continues to inspire those in the legal profession and beyond, leaving an enduring mark on the pursuit of a fair and just society.
