Michael “The Count” Bisping is an English mixed martial artist, commentator, actor, author, and former UFC World Champion. He became the first British fighter to win a UFC title, and over a 15-year career was twice crowned MMA International Fighter of the Year. In July 2019, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Today, he commentates on ESPN, hosts the popular podcast “Believe You Me”, and his new book, “Quitters Never Win”, tells his story of a boy from a small town in Lancashire rising to become the UFC world champion.

In this insightful interview, Michael joins host Brian Rose at London Real studios to discuss his early days in MMA, his graduation to the UFC, why he is strongly against steroid use and what it’s like to win the belt and become world champion.

Born on February 28, 1979, in Nicosia, Cyprus, Michael Bisping spent his early years in Clitheroe, Lancashire, England. Initially drawn to boxing, Bisping transitioned to mixed martial arts in the early 2000s, driven by a desire to compete in a more diverse and challenging sport. His background in kickboxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu laid the foundation for a successful career in MMA.

Michael gained widespread recognition through his participation in the reality TV series “The Ultimate Fighter 3” in 2006. Bisping emerged as the winner of the light heavyweight division, earning him a UFC contract and a platform to showcase his skills on a global stage.

Bisping made his UFC debut in June 2006, announcing his arrival with a victory over Josh Haynes. From there, he quickly climbed the ranks of the middleweight division, showcasing a versatile skill set that included effective striking and solid takedown defence.

The defining moment of Michael Bisping’s career came on June 4, 2016, at UFC 199, where he faced Luke Rockhold for the UFC Middleweight Championship on short notice. Bisping, initially considered an underdog, shocked the world by knocking out Rockhold in the first round, securing the championship belt and etching his name in history as the first British fighter to win a UFC title.

Bisping’s victory at UFC 199 was a testament to his resilience and determination. The triumph was particularly sweet for Bisping, who had endured setbacks and close calls throughout his career, including a previous loss to Rockhold in 2014.

Michael Bisping’s legacy in the UFC extends beyond his championship win. He holds the record for the most significant strikes landed in UFC history and boasts an impressive list of victories against some of the sport’s most notable names, including Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson, and Georges St-Pierre.

Known for his intense fighting style and unwavering self-belief, Bisping’s journey resonated with fans worldwide. His ability to rebound from defeats, adapt his game, and compete at the highest level well into his 30s showcased his dedication to the sport and cemented his status as a true warrior in the Octagon.

In 2018, Michael Bisping announced his retirement from professional fighting after a storied career that spanned over a decade. Post-retirement, he seamlessly transitioned into a career in broadcasting and commentating. His insightful analysis and candid commentary have made him a popular figure on UFC broadcasts, providing fans with a unique perspective from someone who has experienced the challenges and triumphs of the fight game firsthand.

Michael Bisping’s journey from a small town in England to the summit of the UFC’s middleweight division is a story of perseverance, courage, and an unyielding commitment to excellence.

His impact on mixed martial arts transcends championships; it is embedded in the memories of fans who witnessed his thrilling battles inside the Octagon.
