Jamie Bartlett is a British author and journalist who writes about technology, the internet and politics. He founded the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at the think tank Demos and is the author of The Dark Net, Radicals, The People Vs Tech and The Missing Cryptoqueen, which grew out of his BBC podcast of the same name.
Brian Rose has interviewed Bartlett twice on London Real, in 2014 and 2017. They talked about the hidden corners of the internet, from drug markets to extremist groups, and about the outsiders and radical movements that he believes are changing politics and society.
Both interviews are listed below with a short summary.
Inside The Digital Underworld (2014). His first interview, about the research for The Dark Net, which took him from online drug markets to meetings with British neo-Nazis.
In 2014 Bartlett described the parts of the internet most people never see, and argued that understanding them matters, because they show both the worst and some of the most inventive sides of human behaviour online.
In 2017 he argued that many of the ideas that later go mainstream start with radicals on the fringes, whether techno-futurists, environmental activists or political movements on the left and right.
Across both interviews he looked at how the internet changes politics, extremism and the way people find each other, a theme he later developed in The People Vs Tech.
