Chuck Palahniuk is an American novelist and former journalist, best known for Fight Club, his first published novel, which David Fincher adapted into the 1999 film. Born in Pasco, Washington, in 1962, he worked as a diesel mechanic before his writing took off. His other novels include Survivor, Invisible Monsters, Choke and Lullaby, and he describes his work as transgressive fiction.
Brian Rose has interviewed Palahniuk twice on London Real, in 2020 and 2023. They have talked about his minimalist style, how he finds and tests a story, writing as a kind of therapy, his writers’ workshops, rites of passage for young men, censorship, the making of Fight Club and his novels The Invention of Sound and Not Forever, But For Now.
Both interviews are listed below in order with a short summary.
How the Cult Author of Fight Club Made Nihilism Fun Again (October 2020). The fuller conversation about his craft: how he builds a story, why he treats writing as therapy, and his memories of making Fight Club. For his more recent work, watch Fight Club Author on Acts of Rebellion and His New Book: Not Forever, But For Now (2023).
Speaking in 2023, Palahniuk said he started writing because he could no longer find books that hooked him from the first page, so he decided to write the kind of book he wanted to read himself.
In his 2020 interview he described how writing about a subject becomes a way of working through it, and how a writers’ workshop can work like a support group. In 2023 he said his workshops had become more than a community to him.
Palahniuk argues that young people need a secondary father figure and real rites of passage into adulthood, and that adults forget their own reckless youth when they judge the next generation. He linked this to the hazing stories and transformations in his fiction.
He says almost everything in his books is something people have told him, and that readers bring him stories at his events. He described readings where audience members fainted or wept.
Speaking in 2020 about legacy, he said the goal is not to live for ever but to create something that will, and he wondered aloud whether he is doomed to keep writing fatalistic stories.
