Spiritual Tools For Life

“Your greatest contribution to humanity is your own self-realisation.”

In short: Dandapani is a meditation and mindset teacher who lived with his guru and trained as his initiated student. In this short 2019 London Real clip from the Success Secrets series, Brian Rose asks what he would tell his 20-year-old self, and Dandapani answers with advice on finding a master, doing the work and turning inward.

Success Secrets collects the closing questions Brian asks every guest. Here he asks Dandapani to phone the 20-year-old Dandapani in Perth, a young man dreaming of becoming a monk, and give him a piece of advice.

His answer is the same as when Brian asked three years earlier: go to the monastery straight away and stay by his guru’s side to learn from him and serve him. From there he moves to what he sees as the most precious human experience, finding the pure energy at the centre of yourself.

He also tells the story of a childhood birthday party that taught him that everything ends, and explains why he distrusts gadgets that claim to measure meditation.

Key takeaways

  • Go to your teacher earlier. Dandapani would tell his younger self to go to the monastery immediately, and calls living with his guru the greatest blessing of his life.
  • A real master gives tools, not promises. His guru told him he would not hand anything out: the path and tools were offered but the work was his.
  • The deepest experience is inward. Dandapani says that experiencing the pure energy within you matters even more than having a child, whom he loves with his life.
  • Everything is one energy. He says the same energy runs through people, trees and stones, which is why caring for others and the environment protects what is within you.
  • Self-improvement serves everyone. He compares upgrading yourself to software, from version 2.1 to 2.3, so that each version improves how you affect the world.
  • Do not outsource self-knowledge. He questions meditation headsets and apps, and urges people to train their body, mind and nervous system to become fine instruments.

Find the master and do the work

Brian shares advice from his guest Ido Portal: when you find the right master, learn whatever they have to teach you. Dandapani says he was lucky to meet his guru, and recommends that anyone who finds a teacher should be humble, obedient and responsive.

He describes his guru’s approach: he could show him the goal, the path and the tools, but “the work you have to do”. Dandapani contrasts that with teachers who promise results, and says that if you follow the instructions and do the work, you will arrive.

The birthday party that taught him about endings

At around eight or nine, Dandapani recalls, a drive home from a cousin’s birthday party made him realise that every happy event ends. He describes the three phases of creation, preservation and dissolution, then told himself he refused to believe that everything in life ends and decided there must be a constant.

That constant, he concluded, is the pure energy that runs through everyone and everything, which he calls God, and connecting with it shows that we are all one. For him that is the foundation for caring about other people and the planet.

Self-realisation and humanity

Dandapani argues that the best thing you can do for people is work on your own enlightenment, because as you uplift yourself you affect everyone around you. He wants everyone to raise their consciousness so that children, grandchildren and those not yet born have a world to live in.

Brian adds that wise people from very different backgrounds, from billionaires to a Mr. Olympia, keep telling him the same thing: we are all one and here to serve the greater good.

Why not rely on gadgets?

Dandapani notes that apps and headbands now measure brain waves and heartbeats for meditation, and asks whether we need a gadget to tell us about ourselves. He points to ancient communities who found medicine by training the body, mind and nervous system to sense plants and animals.

His guru’s advice was to lean on your own spine and learn how your body and mind work, since humans are the most advanced tool on the planet yet we rarely read the manual we would happily study for a camera.

Who is Dandapani?

Dandapani is a meditation and mindset teacher who lived with his guru and was initiated as one of his few students. He grew up wanting to be a monk, and speaks about the importance of finding a master and doing the work. He has appeared on London Real more than once, and this clip comes from his 2019 visit, where he answers Brian Rose’s closing questions.

Full transcript: Dandapani on London Real

0:08 Brian Rose: Dandapani, I always ask people a few questions at the end. I’m going to ask you if you could take all the knowledge you have now and make a phone call to the 20-year-old Dandapani, this young man probably in Perth, uh, who maybe has this dream of one day being a monk, um, still is trying to figure things out. Uh, what would you tell him? 20s 20 years old.

0:29 Dandapani: Um, go to the monastery right now.

0:31 Go be with my guru. Yeah, that would be what I would say. And I know you asked me this question 3 years ago and it’s the same answer I’m giving because that’s the one answer I would just go and be by my guru’s side and stay with him and learn with him and serve him and learn from him. That’s what I would do beyond. That would be number one.

0:54 Brian Rose: Do it even faster. Even faster. Go earlier.

0:57 Dandapani: Yeah, but you know, at the end of the day, everything worked out in the right timing, right? And it’s just how it is.

1:05 Brian Rose: I had a guest on my show named Ido Portal, who’s a fantastic human mover, and um he once said to me, he said, “Brian, when you find the right master, learn whatever they have to teach you.” And I didn’t know what he was talking about at the time. I was like, “What if they’re a brick layer and what if they make milk for a living? That has nothing to do with what I want.” But now I understand when you find the right master, learn whatever they have to teach you because they’re ultimately teaching you about life and about yourself, right?

1:33 And you’re so lucky you got to meet that guy.

1:36 Dandapani: I so blessed. Like I said, you know, greatest blessing in my life. You know, every now and then before I had my daughter, people would come up to me and say, “Oh, when you have a child, you know, things change and it’ll be the it’s the most amazing experience in the world to have a child.” And now that I have a child, I can say it is not the most amazing experience in the world.

2:02 I love my daughter with with my life. The most experience, the most amazing experience in the world is experiencing God within yourself. To experience your higher self inside of you to go in so deep and and see this thing and experience this thing that is so pure which is the essence of every human being. That is the most precious experience in the world. And it’s worth sacrificing everything for and it’s worth just dedicating your life to this because at the essence of you, the essence of everything is this pure energy that makes up all of us.

2:39 The greatest blessing in my life has been to have lived with my guru to be initiated as his student that he would choose me as one of his few initiated students to have served him to have loved him and to continue to love him even though he’s not yet and continue to serve him and to be his student and continue to learn from him intuitively and him speaking to me on the inside I feel and guiding me every day in my life that has been the greatest blessing of my life, you know, and uh and I think it’s it’s such a rare thing to find a a teacher like that and a master and to have that relationship. But if you’re ever lucky to have one, devote yourself to him or her, you know, and be a good student, be humble, be obedient, and be responsive

3:27 Brian Rose: and he taught you how to access that state within within you.

3:31 Dandapani: Yes, he he taught me the path to that. He gave me the tools and then it was up to me to do the work, right? He said, “I can share with you the tools. I can share with you the goal. I can share with you the path to the goal and to use the tools to help you be on the path to get to the goal, but the work you have to do.

3:53 I’m not going to do any of the work. This is you. It’s all up to you, you know.” And he says, “I don’t hand things out. You got to work for it.”

4:00 And I said, “Fine. I’ll work for it. I’ll do whatever it takes. I’ll give my life, you know, and and I think that’s a different big difference, right? People are looking for handouts and there’s so many teachers out there that promise the students this and promise that and give them that, you know, I will deliver this.

4:17 I will give you this. I promise you, you’ll get this. No, my guru never promised me anything. Said, I’ll give you the tools. I’ll show you the steps.

4:26 Do you get it? Well, it’s your choice. You do the work, you get it. You don’t do the work, you don’t get it. I’m not going to promise you anything.

4:33 But if you follow the instructions, you do the work, then it’ll take you there. And so we all should aspire to find that that God in ourselves to find that purity, that pure energy. We all have it. Yes. But very few of us will ever find it because we’re we don’t desire it enough and not focused and not all of those things and we don’t desire it enough, you and Brian when I was about 8 n years old uh that’s when I really discovered my purpose in life you know I remember going to my cousin’s house for birthday party my brother and I was excited and get to go there and see my cousins we play and eat cake and balloons and stuff and and life has three three parts everything has three parts to it that’s creation preservation and destruction or some dissolution where it ends so getting ready all day to go to the party getting in the car with my parents.

5:25 We drive over there. That’s the creation part of it. Then we get to the birthday party. I’m playing with my cousins, eating cakes, sweets, you know, for four or five hours. That’s the preservation.

5:34 Then we get in the car and we’re driving home and I distinctly remember sitting in the back seat and it’s like 11:00 at night, 11:30. I’m kid. I’m tired. I’m looking out the window and I’m thinking to myself, that’s it. It’s over.

5:48 Everything ends. Mom says she’s going to buy me ice cream. So I’m like, my brother’s nice, you should get chocolate. Don’t get chocolate. You got that last week.

5:56 Let’s get the other one that we saw. That’s so cool. We haven’t had that yet. So think about it. Then evening comes, we get in the car, go, that’s the creation, right?

6:04 An ice cream store. We eat ice cream. That’s the second part, the preservation. Then we get in the car, we go home. I’m going like, it ends.

6:12 I said to myself, this sucks. I refuse to believe that everything in life ends. What’s the constant in life? What’s the one thing in life that doesn’t end? There must be a constant.

6:24 We couldn’t be here to just go through all of these experiences. This is the lamest program anyone has sold us. Imagine someone came up to you, gave you something, and then took it away from you. You’re going like, “What the hell? Don’t give this to me if you’re going to take it back.

6:39 Why the heck are we here? What an absolute waste of freaking time to be here going through all of this, right?” And then I realized it must be constant. What is that constant? What is that one thing that doesn’t change?

6:52 And that’s that pure energy that permeates all of us right inside of you, me, the trees, the stones, even the dog poop on the sidewalk. Why do I say the dog poop on the sidewalk? Because people think that that pure intelligent energy needs to only be in the uplifting things and the flower and the unicorns and the rainbows. But no, even in the poop and the sidewalk is that one energy that permeates everything, right? And that at the very core and essence is the one thing that’s constant, right?

7:23 And the very essence of that energy and beyond that is the self, God, right? And going in and experiencing that you are one. Ultimately, you’re connected with everyone and everything around you. And by caring for somebody and loving them, you’re protecting and caring for the same energy that’s within you. And that ultimately is the reason why we need to care for the environment.

7:46 Because that energy out there and that energy inside of us is one energy. If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration. Tesla was a good monk, right? He understood at the essence everything is energy and by going within you you experience that and that’s the one constant in life cuz ask yourself you know like every we’re here only for a finite period of time and at some point we’re going to die don’t believe life is short life in fact is very long if I told you we’re going to jail for 20 years you go like holy crap 20 years that’s a long time so if I get to live for 20 years that’s a long time too so life is not short but it’s finite you know and you have to realize that nothing is permanent you can’t take anything with you.

8:34 So, we’re here for definitely a higher purpose and the and the and the greatest thing that you can do for humanity and for everyone around you is to work on your own enlightenment to attain that self-realization because like that monk said your greatest contribution to humanity is your own self-realization. Version 2.3 of Brian Rose is better than version 2.1 and version 2.3 of Dandapani is better than version 2.1. As I uplift myself, I impact humanity and everything around me in a better way.

9:06 And that should be everyone’s quest. Uplift your consciousness so that you can uplift everyone else and then create a world where we can all thrive in. Your kids can thrive in your grandkids, your great-grandkids, the people that you love, even the ones that haven’t been born that you will adore one day and love and kiss them to death and hug them to death. They will have a place to live in.

9:28 Brian Rose: You know, this is something I hear over and over again by some of the wisest people that come in here.

9:34 It’s this whole thing of we are all one. There’s an energy. We’re here to serve each other and the greater good. And uh it’s just amazing to hear it come from you and it comes from people that don’t look like you. It comes from people that are uh Mr. Olympia and uh billionaires and all these other people.

9:53 But if they live long enough and they become wise enough, they they keep telling me these same things and that makes me really hopeful about the future. You know, I do believe that deep down inside we all get it. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of great distractions out there. Yeah. and they kind of keep us there. And we’re also training ourselves to be less in tune with us, right?

10:15 Dandapani: So now if you want to meditate, there’s things that you can put on your head. I think it’s a muse or something like a headpiece that can measure your brain waves and give you feedback and you know an app that changes the sound or how you meditate based on your heartbeat. I’m like, what the hell? You know, do we need a gadget to tell us about us? You know, there was a time for thousands of years, humanity roamed the earth in Europe and Asia and Africa, everywhere, where we had no gadgets.

10:47 We walked into the forest. We knew what root healed what problem. If we ate that leaf, it would take care of the diarrhea I have. Humanity knew this, right? That’s how we survived for tens of thousands of years.

10:58 We figured out medicine. So, how did people know that every time I have diarrhea, I go eat 20 roots. eat 50 bushes, leaves from 50 trees, hoping one of them would kill me. No, we knew, we intuitively knew people could connect with plants, with animals, and they sensed it because what they did was they trained their body, they trained their mind, they trained their nervous system to be so sensitive that they could be in tune with that. Remember I talked about matching those frequencies.

11:26 And that’s how in so many cultures people have developed medicine across oceans tens of thousands of miles apart. They used their body, their mind, their nervous system to be fine instruments to communicate with everything around and understand how we could coexist and help each other. I can look after this tree and in turn this tree can look after me by providing me with medicine, you know, turmeric to cure this, to cure that. Now we depend completely on machines.

11:55 Even to meditate we plug ourselves with a whole bunch of things to measure data to see this to see that. Why don’t you just get rid of all that stuff and get to know your body get to know your mind. My guru would say lean on your own spine and learn to do that. Get to know who you are. Get to know how your body works.

12:13 But not using an instrument but you truly learning to feel and sense that. He says you better train your body, your mind, your nervous system to become an instrument and you know a beautiful perfect instrument then you can really communicate and connect with everything around you. We hum humans are the most advanced tool on this planet. It’s the greatest tool. We created all of this, right?

12:39 Yet we never take time to understand us. You know you want to learn how to use a Nikon D850. You spend hours taking tutorials how it works or learn a computer. We take classes. But we are the ones that built all of that.

12:54 Yeah. We never take any time to learn about us and how we work, how our body works, how our mind works.
