Rose McGowan is an American actress, activist and author, born in Florence, Italy, in 1973, known for films including Scream and The Doom Generation and the TV series Charmed. In 2017 she publicly accused the producer Harvey Weinstein of abuse, helping to spark the MeToo movement, and Time named her one of its Silence Breakers. Her memoir Brave was published in 2018.
Brian Rose interviewed McGowan on London Real in April 2019, covering her childhood in a religious group, life on the streets as a teenager, Hollywood fame, speaking out and her book Brave. She joined him again in May 2021 for an Instagram Live conversation about his campaign to become Mayor of London.
Both appearances are listed below with a short summary of each.
Be Brave (April 2019). The full interview, recorded after the publication of her memoir, covering her life story and why she spoke out.
The message of her book and her 2019 interview is that people should question the systems of power around them, in entertainment and beyond, rather than accept them.
McGowan describes being born into one cult and coming of age in another, more visible one: Hollywood. She says the industry packaged her as a sexualised image and expected her to stay silent.
Her decision to go public about Harvey Weinstein became central to exposing harassment in the entertainment industry. She talks about the cost of speaking up and why she did it anyway.
In Brave and on London Real she describes rebuilding her life on her own terms after years of having her image controlled by others.
