Why are NFTs so important?

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, refers to any form of property that is unique; it can be anything from a traditional type of collectible such as a trading card to other item types such as art, music and even computer code.
In 2021, NFTs made their mark on mainstream media when Beeple, a well known artist, sold his work Everydays: the First 5000 Days, for over $69 million dollars via Christies, the first pure NFT to be sold by the world-famous auction house.
Collins Dictionary even made NFT its Word of the Year, recognising the increasing popularity of digital assets.
Since then, NFTs have become a buzzword for digital art, with series such as Cryptopunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club and EtherRocks all helping to establish this emergent new category.
In reality, however, NFTs aren’t limited to high end art; as sporting brands, content owners and collectibles have started launching their own offerings, they have begun to move beyond the initial hype… metamorphosing to become a new type of product category that is already transforming marketplaces.
Offering a censorship-free way for artists, musicians and other creators to ensure that they are rewarded for their work, as well as providing an innovative way of tracking the authenticity and provenance of assets, it is little wonder that NFTs are already cementing their place in the consumer retail ecosystem.
