Klaus Yohannes – The Black Viking

Klaus Yohannes is an athlete, fighter, poet and founder of the Black Vikings, a group dedicated to the embrace of struggle and the mastery of suffering.

He is on a mission to complete “The seven sagas”, physical challenges intended to test the mind and soul.

On Maundy Thursday this year, he attempted the “Crucification Saga”, which involved carrying a 60kg wooden railway sleeper across his back, barefoot and bare-chested, for 7.2 miles through central London. The challenge almost ended his life.

He expected this march to take 5 hours but it instead lasted 9 hours and 46 minutes, as his arms went numb and he repeatedly fell headfirst onto the pavement. People from all walks of life came to his aid throughout the journey.

Two days later he was diagnosed with a life-threatening spinal cord injury and received emergency surgery. He is now convalescing in order to continue his sagas with the Black Vikings.

Klaus comes from a country of warriors so its no surprise he is bullet proof. I served in Djibouti with the Legion in the 80’s. The Eritreans were hard core and gave the Ethiopian Army a good thrashing. Used to see them walking with little more than rags and an AK47 over the shoulder crossing hundreds of kilometers to fight an army with tanks and jet bombers.

60KG on your back and 7 miles? We used to do that everyday before breakfast in the Swiss army in the 80’s. Well, we didn’t show of in central London, it’s too flat. Not fun.

Man!!! You’re onto something great here Brian! Sharing every day stories that most can relate to. Well, I don’t walk around with a railway sleeper, but the daily struggle is nonetheless very real. Thanks for sharing!

I have thought about this interview for days and I can’t judge Klaus’ ideals but I admire and am inspired by his commitment to them.
Who on earth can you interview after this?

I’m sorry for this man. He should know better. Through self-torture, self-realization will not come. He is destroying the precious instrument, the physical body, instead of developing self-awareness. Moderate discipline is good and necessary, but self-realization comes through living and enjoying now and here. Sick and injured body will not allow us to enjoy life. He thinks he evolves but his body shows the opposite. In a healthy body is a healthy spirit, but he does the opposite. He follows Jesus ‘example and Jesus’ life was a complete failure. You do not need to torture the body to live mindfully… Read more »
