Dr Neal Barnard is the American nutrition researcher, author, and health advocate.

His work promotes a plant-based diet and has been featured in the vegan documentaries ‘What the Health’ and ‘Forks Over Knives’.  In 2011, he was inducted into the Vegetarian Hall of Fame.

His upcoming book ‘Your Body in Balance’ explores the new science of how hormones are wreaking havoc on the body, and a solution that improves health, reduces pain, and sheds weight.

that was a great episode. I didn’t realize Dr Neal was so cool in terms of playing guitar and keyboards. I think he definitely believes in what he does and him taking dog lab out of medical school curriculum is really amazing. That said, I do think he is a little blind to the benefits of consciously sourced grass fed meat or wild caught fish as a source of nutrients. He kept bringing the conversation back to a comparison to cigarettes and alcohol both of which can’t be used as a head to head comparison to meat simply because nobody… Read more »

Extremist views on any subject are detrimental, especially when it comes to diet and exercise, because every individual is so unique both biologically (especially with age) and environmentally (stress, relationships, sleep, etc.) Unless you’ve annually tested yourself for standard metrics, micro-nutrient absorption, testosterone, food sensitivities, etc., you have no idea what’s happening at the cellular level. In your 20s and 30s you can eat foods you have a low level of sensitivity to and not notice any difference, but once you hit your 50s those decades of low level inflammation translate to the “old age aches and pains” people start… Read more »

OMFG! Did he just say that eating fat causes diabetes AND IT IS NOT THE EATING OF SUGAR??? THIS IS FUCKING CRIMINAL ADVICE.. meat protein and fat does not stimulate insulin release, sugar and starchy carbs do, hyperinsulinemia is the result, then NAFLD, THEN hypertension, then impaired glucose tolerance, then full blown T2DM, then cardiovascular disease. Ive seen this pattern literally hundreds of times. This man is talking utter SHITE.

Talking about the greatest in sports – just check the story of Carl Lewis. Lewis is a vegan. “Lewis credits his outstanding 1991 results in part to the vegan diet he adopted in 1990, when he was in his late twenties.”

This is very interesting statistics about the rising Diabetes and Cardiovascular diseases in India and China because of quitting the vegetarian way of traditional eating and consuming more meat .The pork is imported in China mainly from the USA .

No athletes on a plant-based diet are at the top of their game? Let’s list a few for you: Novak Djokovic Alex Honnold Lewis Hamilton Serena Williams Though this isn’t the main point. The main point (if you could see past your cognitive biases) is that you don’t need to consume meat and other animal products to perform at an elite level. This means such positives as cutting carbon emissions and preventing the unnecessary suffering of animals. Who cares about those things though when you’re too busy being ‘the best you’. I find it so odd coming from someone who… Read more »

“When you don’t study Islam, you’re going down the wrong path as well.” If you’re curious on this topic, read the works of Nabeel Qureshi. He was a very intelligent, open-minded man who passed in 2017. Sir, I have to admit, you displayed a lot of your cultural conditioning with your facial expressions. How can people not see the absurdity of the consumption of cheese? Cheese is the product of pasteurized cow, goat, buffalo… lactation. Many species lactate for their offspring, so to take the lactation of a species other than our own, then pasteurize it, is unnatural, and one… Read more »

Thank you to Dr Barnard for sharing his hard work. Sad the interviewer so closed minded. Cancer, obesity, heart attacks get people’s attention.

I’ve been eating either a vegan or vegetarian diet (with a few minor departures) for 50 years, but I must admit that this gives me pause. I do wish that they had addressed plaque in the arteries, but I left a comment to that effect.

Thanks for interviewing Dr Barnard. He has such important info to share.

However, I don’t understand the interview style, It could be more focused on the speaker’s contributions. I think that’s why we’re all here.

I’ve been a fan of Dr. Barnard’s for a good many years. I was looking for an interview to share with a friend. Unfortunately, I was halted in my tracks and was terribly disappointed with the unnecessary political jabs. Dr. Barnard’s political comments drove a swift sword in the message for all the people he could have reached by sticking to a science-based message. Bashing President Trump goes a long way toward alienating a lot of people who need the message of good health. I know this as I am quite the anomoly – a republican oil-free, dairy-free, vegetarian &… Read more »

Loved this interview – he make such great points! Go DR NEALE Go – keep saving lives! Agree with Brian that maybe small amounts of healthy animal products like wild caught fish or free range eggs or butter or ghee might be necessary for some but many of us could do with more whole plant foods in our diet for sure

Vegans are a tiny percentage of the population. The number of vegan athletes who are would class is amazing. Saying that none of them are number one in theri sport is moving the goalposts. Carl Lewis ate a vegan diet when he broke Olympic records. Serena Williams dominated Women’s Tennis. Novak Djokovich eats plant based. Google “vegan athletes.” The list goes on and on. They proved that animal products aren’t needed for high performance. Endurance athletes are even more impressive. Scott Jurek is a good example of the performance advantages of a wfpb vegan diet.

You keep on referring to your friend, “vegan for five years and now eating red meat” I assume this is Tim Shieff, (the piss drinking, ex vegan, crackpot) Tim in his self is a occult and a pretty fuck up one.

Brian, I think you gave Tim Schieff way too much credit when you had him on your show You need to let go of what he said before and after his twisted vegan journey and listen to the MD who is steeped in science and has a strong moral compass.

Who is the web developer on London real?? What a horrible video experience! I can’t full screen, I can’t pause etc, basic function removed….why?? To promote share icons…? Please fix this – people will share it regardless if content is good.

Really good interview. I enjoyed how you both had a respecting conversation. I love Dr Neal Bernard. He has so much knowledge and passion for what he does. He seems like an ambitious and humble man. Very modest. Love that he also sees the ethical side of Veganism. I also agree Veganism is a Lifestyle not a diet. A plant based diet is part of a Vegan lifestyle but it alone does not make one a Vegan. Also being vegan is about reducing harm as is far as reasonably possible. We are aware that bugs and insects and little animals… Read more »
