Dorian Yates – Return Of The Shadow

[sg_popup id=”12″ event=”onload”][/sg_popup]

It is truly a pleasure to present to you once again six-times Mr Olympia Dorian Yates.

Our last episode with Dorian is the stuff of legend among London Real fans, so we knew that if we were going to do it again, it would have to be phenomenal.

In this week’s interview Dorian takes us back to his days as a troubled but determined young man, struggling to find his way after losing his father at 14.

During a spell in a detention centre for a minor crime, he discovered bodybuilding, and the combination of natural talent and a rapacious thirst for knowledge, meant that it was pretty evident from an early age he was destined for greatness.
Bodybuilding for Dorian Yates was, and is, more than just a sport training, diet and nutrition.

The attention to detail, the discipline, and the emphasis on form and muscle control mean that he also considers it an art form.

For all you athletes out there, you will have more than enough new knowledge to discover in this episode about training, nutrition and the human body.

Dorian has PhD knowledge in all these things.

But he’s also an expert in psychology.

Dorian’s extra-competitive nature drove him to mastery over his mind.

To this day the thing that marks out his career is the mental attitude he brought to the sport.

Back in the early eighties, bodybuilding was suffering from the glamorous Hollywood image that followed Arnie.

Dorian, coming from the Midlands in England, from a working class background, changed all that.

As he says in the course of our intimate discussion, he never changed his work ethic, his commitment or his attitude to his job, regardless of his successes.

For Dorian, his defining quality was, and still is, authenticity.

He instantly won over spectators across the world because people knew he was real, that there was no rock-star act.

We also talk about life after success. Dorian gets vulnerable and reveals a real crisis point after he retired in 1997.

However, bodybuilding’s workout is such a disciplined and psychologically demanding craft, that Dorian had inadvertently prepared himself for life’s spiritual challenges.

The same focus and determination that built the world’s most impressive bodybuilding physique, is now being used to ‘raise his vibrations’.

Dorian is a very spiritual guy, and at times talks like an old sage.

He wants to make the world a better place.

But his message is very simple — change your mind and you change your reality.

The move from physical athlete to spiritual athlete seems like it has been a very logical one for Dorian.

He applies the same level-headedness, humility and quiet confidence to every topic we cover in this episode.

It’s Dorian’s consistency that makes him such an impressive guest, and probably what makes him such an appealing character to his fans.

He is ruthlessly himself, regardless of the situation, and it is this authenticity that makes him such a pleasure to interview.

Welcome back to LR. Who knew the impact? [5:45]

Tweet by Dorian  – I’m going to pull no punches. Going into a different range of subjects. [6:05]

Doing a sport doesn’t define you. [8:00]

Why Dorian didn’t do much media. [9:10]

Making a resolution to do DMT. [9:50]

Dorian on DMT, Ayahuasca, Meditation – I see it as changing your vibration. [12:05]

One Love One Heart tattoo. We are all one and One is everyone. One consciousness with billions of different experiences at the same time. We are all from the same source. [12:45]

Did you always feel very connected? The spiritual aspect to training. [13:28]

The charity run that made Dorian realise he was an athlete. [13:59]

Learning that as an athlete you can go into the zone. [15:45]

The turmoil when retiring. Now who am I? What do I do? [15:55]

Dorian on his childhood – growing up in Solihull, the smallholding, a chicken farm and with a mum who loves horse riding and dad who had a heart attack when he was 13. Leaving home at 16. [17:22]

How did your father’s death make you feel? [19:20]

At 16, Dorian was either a skinhead, a punk or a mod. [21:00]

Sent to a detention centre at 1981 and the impact it had on Dorian. [22:10]

Recommended to go a powerlifting gym and getting results quickly. [25:40]

The early success that made Dorian realises he had a natural potential to build the physique. [26:18]

Dorian on the education system. It’s not education, it’s indoctrination. Write, read and basic mathematics. Most of the time is just wasted. “I never ever did any homework.” [26:08]

Dedication to get a flat. Casa Vaile [28:35]

I needed these things before I go to the gym – getting a job, an apartment and needing stability. [29:30]

Reading every bodybuilding magazine between 1980 – 1995. [29:55]

I’ve got every workout, every rep, every weight, and diet between 1983 – 1997. [30:17]

Doesn’t sound much but if I did that every month for 12 months, I’ll be massive. I will always break it down to achievable goals. [30:40]

I will simply eliminate it and move on – on things that did not work. [31:25]

Science experiment, a sport and an art. [31:40]

Dorian’s daughter – Dad I’m growing up too quick. I just want to stay a I kid. Why is that? [32:00]

Bodybuilding was always about self mastery, discipline and overcoming pain and not eating during competition. [33:00]

Living like a monk for 2 years – I would say it’s more like the whole 12 years I was competing. [34:00]

Pre internet age. The strength of your career depends on the strength of your library. [35:30]

Meticulous rather than guesstimating. [35:00]

I only had one egg. [36:45]

Winning first British competition. [37:00]

Blood and guts training video. [50:10]

Getting a friend to film but don’t ever talk to me. [51:08]

When was it filmed? [51:30]

Rehearsal before training. No distractions before and during training. [52:10]

An art form of how to put the most stress on the muscle. [53:00]

Bodybuilder vs weight lifter or power lifter. [53:05]

Benchpress as a bodybuilder [55:00]

Telling stories to my kids and grandkids about the weights I used to lift. I got prove now. [55:56]

What you thought about the Americans. Most schools and colleges will have a weight room. [56:11]

Seminar circuit meeting the mythical guy. [57:30]

Night of champions. Influence of publicity. [58:00]

The whole crowd started chanting. Dorian! Dorian! Dorian! [1:00:00]

Based in New York rather than California. [1:00:20]

The competition in New York. The traumatic week before the contest. [1:01:15]

Hotel Chelsea where Sid Vicious stayed. [1:02:20]

If I didn’t get a place in the top 5 in the contest, I wouldn’t compete again. [1:03:40]

The illusion in bodybuilding. Wow this guy is one of us, we can relate to that. [1:05:20]

Lee Haney has been Mr Olympia for the whole time I was training and going up and up everytime. [1:06:59]

People and myself included started thinking, I could maybe take this guy. [1:07:20]

A great workout every time. [1:08:14]

Everything is mental. [1:09:40]

The vibrations that you are giving of will give you a different experience. [1:11:00]

Suppressing the emotions. Feeling like breaking down and crying. [1:12:20]

This guy is here to stay. [1:14:10]

Nutrition and conditioning separates the men from the boys. [1:17:20]

Working out how to pose. Puffiness in the face. [1:19:00]

Always built on my shadow. [1:20:00]

Some years of training were more difficult. 1994 I tore my bicep thinking it’s all over. [1:22:20]

Oh no not again! [1:22:15]

Stress can make your body retain water. [1:23:20]

You might look like a Greek God statue but you feel like crap. [1:24:00]

My feet was in pain because the layer of fat was so lean. [1:25:00]

First Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream after the contest. [1:25:50]

Were the numbers in your head when you started to get 4 and 5 titles. [1:26:00]

This is like a job now. It was starting to get tedious. [1:26:48]

Cortisol injection to reduce inflammation was bad advice because it was catabolic. [1:27:50]

1997 I felt weak and I was on painkiller. [1:29:00]

THe injury was a blessing in disguise. Maybe that had to happen. [1:30:50]

No guest appearance and didn’t hang around the sport. I just dropped out. [1:31:00]

The transformation that had to happen for me to be multi-dimensional. [1:32:00]

Spiritual. I could only hear silence. [1:32:15]

I never took my shirt of again, almost like I don’t want to show you this faulty broken thing. [1:33:40]

People demand now for this… and the knowledge that comes out of it. [1:34:10]

There is a lot more in your nutrition and training that can be done. It still fascinates me. [1:35:00]

What’s the state of bodybuilding today vs 18 years ago when you left it? [1:35:25]

Arnold Schwarzenegger [1:38:30]

What’s my main purpose. Why am I doing this interview now? [1:39:40]

We are all drops in the ocean. To change the ocean I can only change me. [1:41:00]

Binaural meditation. [1:41:44]

The real things in life are the experiences. The effect that you have on your fellow man and the world. [1:42:45]

What’s it like being married to a body builder? [1:43:45]

Dorian, you are on the right track! I am with you! I started questioning the whole sunblock situation a few years ago, and lately the conclusion is: more people are getting cancer from the lack of sun ( not even mentioning the chemicals in sun lotion), I don’t even think sun causes skin cancer…. sun provides energy, via d and helps to cures many diseases ….I love that you are in this path….keep on going.

Thanks for the video, ideas and thoughts presented on it.
Very nice combo, mix of in a way unrelated matters which somehow do make a bigger picture in the end.
Not sure if that is a bodybuilder’s gene or a good person’s gene whatever the case a lot of things which I could relate to and hopefully which proves the point that there are many people out there in the world thinking the same, acting for the common, greater good and soon we will see the global result of all this focused effort, rippling and vibrations.

so incredible to see a man i admired when i was a teenager and i was into training. it’s beautiful to see the growth and even if with 15 years of difference we have had a similar path. everything this man has discovered spiritually , i went through myself. i’t’s a true inspiration to see that we are all looking for the source.

Love listening to Dorian, the only thing I didn’t like was he always cut Brian’s questions off early.. He should wait for the full question which may then have sub questions attached…

Andrew McLellan

I loved the first interview. This not so much. Regardless if he says he was just answering the guys question, he clearly contradicted himself. He said he had no effects apart from water retention and acne. Now it seems he’s been taking test boosters since before he even turned 40. Also, a lot of the things he was talking about he clearly wasn’t qualified to make such statements. The skin statement was retarded… “it’s probably worse…” I still enjoyed the interview, but quite disappointed with some of his views. He tried to talk on too many subjects that he isn’t… Read more »

Yates repeatedly contradicted himself during the same interview. Not to mention spouting a lot of uninformed nonsense typical of conspiracy theorists that really don’t know much of what they’re talking about. And he actually believes drinking juice allows him to lie in the sun without sunscreen. The questioning was poor when there was no follow-up to him clearly alluding to being a highly depressed person. Not to mention no follow-up to drowning himself in alcohol and taking drugs after retirement. Has he ever seen a therapist to deal with his mental issues? We don’t know because the question wasn’t asked.… Read more »

you literally haven’t got a clue my friend, everyone can see that Dorian is very real and genuine and he doesn’t pull no punches, I like Dorian’s comment about the ripple effect with the water, because this is so true and is very relevant about your post. project a negative energy get negative energy back (my post), old saying of no one is perfect, i doubt you are too, just like I am not, we are all here trying to have this experience, remember that!!

i feel dorian is really real and open to learn. a true open minded human. the negative criticisms i see in the comments, show that alot of people are clearly not on that path of growth and self-discovery.

I’m amazed. When I was in my late teens, I wanted to be a bodybuilder. Dorian was my idol. When I got my first two tattoos, I got them on my forearms, to be like him. I Knew nothing about the man, except what I read in all the muscle mags. Now I’m in my mid 40’s and I find myself attracted to his mind. I’ve drank ayahuasca, but haven’t yet done DMT. It’s amazing that I find myself on a parallel journey with him ( in some aspects), even at this stage of my life.

The bodybuilding stuff is interesting but its everything else Dorian talked about that was even more inspiring. His words about the power structure on the planet, psychedelics, the observations of us all being one, etc. People are waking up to these things as I have. Inspiring. Excellent interview.

I’ve been a non-competitive bodybuilder and competitive power lifter for the past 40 years. I followed the sport of bodybuiding during that whole time and never knew how intelligent and down to earth Dorian Yates was. This is an outstanding interview and quite inspiring. I really like his confidence and work ethic. I also like how he didn’t do the photo shoot with sunglasses and a girl on his arm!!

Wow, what a superb interview, came to the piece out of curiosity via YouTube, never been a bodybuilder but weight trained all my life for fitness. Dorian’s philosophies on so many subjects outside of his sport , his take on life in general are so in line with my own I could not believe it. A truly fascinating guy and after watching his original interview from a couple of years ago I must say hats off to London Real for giving him this platform, one of the most interesting interviews I’ve seen for years.

Dorian is awesome! I knew during the 90’s that he was not mainstream and what he accomplished had to be done the hard way but I couldn’t imagine that he was so esoteric The status quo of artificial and superficial values cannot ultimately win as long as there is a spark of the other side and Dorian is definitely a spark of hope. Now even more his fan!!!!!!!!!!

Finally I managed to see the whole interview and I am so impresed with Dorian Yates. I would never imagine this guy has this level of perception. He really points out these crucial elements both personal, individual and social, that realy targets many of these either individual or much broader problems… Best luck Dorian.

If you are reading this and agree, you are not alone!,You are the resistance!(So to speak!?,Bad Terminator Joke!?).As Dorian and other people that ‘Get it!” say – Change urself and when finished, if done correctly. The world ? will turn into a reflection of the good people that made it this way!.Game-on!✊??☝✌ ?…….

Awesome interview! I remember buying Mr. Yates training book and video in 1997 or 1996 they came together. Regarding the spiritual matters of life is true there are many ways to enter the spiritual realm, I used to mediate a bit years ago but it was not until I got baptize by the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ that I found the way to enter properly it opened up my spiritual eyes and hears as the other senses as well. I put on soaking music and pray in the spirit as I worship Jesus Christ. Anyway thanks for the video!

@ Francisco Torres – As usual for Thiests! Thank’s for telling us about ur invisible man in the sky!You didn’t understand a thing Dorian said there did you?!The Meditation that Dorian was talking of was a tool to help achieve certain result’s!. The last thing he was talking about was imaginary being’s or religion!Out of all the point’s you could have got across about this insightful interview with a great man you had to go the ‘Jesus love’s you!’ route!!?????

Stay off the hallucinogens and stay away from yoga and meditation. Repent and be baptized, receive the Holy Spirit, get to know Jesus. I say that because I think you are great guys but lost only insofar as your concept of “spirituality.” Read New Testament and it talks about spirits, unclean spirits, demons, angels. The Old Testament warns to stay away from mediums and spiritists. Stay away from drugs (DMT, THC, etc.) for recreational uses, that’s how demons get inside you. That’s how they are able to influence your thoughts. And as Dorian said, all reality starts with a thought,… Read more »

I loved this interview. It’s amazing the things that I’ve learned over the past few years, being the state of the world, the royals, arnold and his mates, Dorian knows it all. From one bodybuilder to another, what an amazing insight to one of the sports greatest. I will closely follow Dorian from know on. Look forward to hearing more from him!

Dorian Yates was and still is the number one Mr. Olympia physique. No one including Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler and Phil Heath has matched his size and degree of leanness combination.

I remember seeing Dorian in the bodybuilding magazines in England in about 88(was stationed there in the Air Force) thinking who was this? Knowing he would eventually be a name in bodybuilding.

Dorian is the best man in the world. Amazing human being. He’s not judgmental towards other people, he’s not racist or hateful towards anybody. He proved that he was/is the best bodybuilder in the world, he isn’t all talk unlike other people who do everything to make themselves look good.

Kind a dissapointed, as more less the same content as in “Dorian Yates – Into The Shadow – Redux London Real” interview. But Dorian, he is definitely a role model, no doubt for that. Great person, tons of wisdom.

This is really inspiring. Watched the whole video and got some good tips about life. I am his fan from 1999 when i got into bodybuilding and read about him in Flex magazine. He is a down to earth guy. He said consistency and short term goals are key to success. This is going to be my plan of action now 🙂

I’ve been bodybuilding since the age of 15 for 12 years and following Dorian all that time. One day out of 7 billion people on the planet I bumped into him randomly on the streets of Amsterdam. He took time, stopped to talk to me and a friend of mine, was a very cool guy!

Dorian Yates, THE SHADOW, is true bodybuilder legend. He was the best Mr. Olympia in my opinion because of his dedication to the sport and his sincerity. I admire his personality and point of views about life in general. I was admired to his opinions from his first interview in London Real from two years ago. I have watched it several times including the REDUX version. This second interview was amazing too and it has opened my eyes about life in general. We must always be positive in life by being an inspiration to others by passing the message and… Read more »

I watched this and Steve Maxwell back to back. It’s was fascinating to see how much common ground there is from these “been there, done that” role models, with talk of controlling thoughts, meditation, raising vibrations, eschewing goals, higher self etc. Dorian seems so incredibly centred.

I’m a big fan of Dorian, I think the key to his success was is condition and the key to that was the fact he wrote everything down, he knew what worked for him. His skin was so paper thin he looked like he was made of stone! I often wonder how many titles he would have got. Also what a really great guy!

Brilliant interview, Interesting point about the British media and its relationship to body building Dorian made too. I can remember the Sunday People newspaper which is one of the biggest in the UK reporting the fact England had the best body builder who had defended his title in 1993 in Atlanta . I can vividly remember showing it to people as it had a great picture of Dorian front on with those unbelievable lats spread out! Had the pleasure of meeting Dorian a couple times (Pre Mr Olympia and post) always seemed like a good guy, deep thinker.

It’s great to see that he toopk his experience in one arena and moved on rather than just being stuck in the past, he has evolved into a giver of information and a sharer of his experiences and knowledge and good energy.

Another great interview, dare I say perhaps even better than the first?

What a great and inspiring individual. I had the opportunity of training at Temple gym for 3 years whilst I was at university studying Music Technology and always whenever I saw Dorian I was always too scared to approach him as he lived up to his reputation of absolute focus and not wanting to be distracted in the gym. Therefore, I feel it is fantastic that we get to see the much more relaxed and open person that he has now become and share in his view of the world. Great watch!

Brian you’re such a great interviewer and Dorian Yates is such a great guy. He made me laugh so much I was in tears when talked about the newspaper taking his story and reporting the exact opposite, the TV programs requesting him to do the show in his underwear and the WWE bodybuilding circuit and predetermined placings and him possibly having to fabricate rivalries! So funny he’s got a way with words that just make me laugh. Great interview, incredibly informative and inspirational. Thanks for posting!!

A London Real classic. Very well done Brian on this. I subscribed after watching the first DY interview and this one has gone on to even greater heights, a most compelling view. Dorian’s story is amazing and how he achieved it all off his own back relying only on himself. Myself and many others can relate to that. He doesn’t need recognition off the state or any other institution when he has a big place in all of our hearts. Looking forward to seeing you back on here Dorian. Peace x

The tipping point to which D Y alludes does feel like it’s about to manifest. Each time L R interviews one of the cogs in this awakening process, e.g., Peter Joseph, Jacque Fresco et al., it makes me shudder with an anticipation that seems to signal the beginning of a new epoch. L R is bar none the source of the sources. My thanks in abundance for your continuing role in being a seminal tool in the rebuilding of our consciousness/conscience.
