Brian Rose's Real Deal - Culture First - Lockdown Is Killing Our Culture & Theatres - We Need Leadership & Science Now

This is the third Real Deal episode in a special series to find out how we can make London great again.

This week I focus on the importance of cultural events to the capital.

From an economic perspective, theatre represents the most important culture related event type for the capital with London & Partners suggesting that event tourism contributed an estimated £2.8 billion to the London economy last year.

The theatre sector and related industries employ over 290,000 people in the UK, but is massively under threat since the lockdown and new government guidelines. Currently over 70% of those jobs are at risk and many theatres are facing a perilous future.

I sat down with Jon Morgan from the Theatres Trust who told me that:
some operators are going into administration and unfortunately, others are likely to follow. The theatres desperately need the go-ahead for Christmas shows, on which the survival of many theatres depends, in the next few weeks at the very latest.

All this is clearly very concerning, and we must find a way to get this sector operating again, even with the current restrictions that are being imposed across the country.

When Churchill was asked to cut funding to the arts in order to support the war effort in World War II, he responded “Then what would we be fighting for?”

We must act now.

This week I was particularly keen to hear your thoughts on:

  • What is your single biggest economic challenge right now?
  • Do you think culture and theatre are important right now and why?
  • Do we need better leadership?

Real Deal is your chance to join me LIVE to discuss the big issues and I want you to get involved by sending me your questions and opinions.
